Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan is a five-book kids series that chronicles the adventures and mishaps of one Percy Jackson. Trouble-prone Percy learns that the Greek gods of old actually exist and are running around 21st century Manhattan. The first book in the series, The Lightning Thief, has been adapted into a movie and will be released February 12.

In the books, Percy attends to Camp Half-Blood, a training camp and safe haven for the children of the gods, where he spends the summer battles monsters straight out of the myths, makes friends (and enemies), goes on quests to save everything he cares about, and eventually becomes caught up in a war that’s as old as the gods themselves. The books are aimed at a young audience, so the language is fairly simple and they’re very quick reads, but they’re also smart, moving, action packed, and downright hilarious.

What's all this have to do with [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon?

For a series that has been labeled as your typical “boy book,” Percy Jackson has an overwhelming amount of well-rounded, kick-ass female characters. The girls do everything the boys do – lead quests, get in fights, make heroic sacrifices, have crowning moments of awesome – and so much more. Most of them give Percy a run for his money in terms of sheer heroics and skills (Annabeth has a scene in The Last Olympian that is almost ridiculous for the massive amount of badassery it contains, and that's even before the climax where she takes on the main villain. With a broken arm). The women of Percy Jackson are interesting, varied, and real; they have fascinating backstories, motivations, and character arcs. Whether they’re demigods, Greek goddesses or mere mortals, these ladies are the last people you want to mess with.

I originally made these for RPing, but I figured this comm would like them! They're just crops, so I can't claim a whole lot of ownership over them, but credit would be nice anyways. Edit them if you want. I don't know why the formatting's borked.

Doctor Who has quite the tradition of ladies who don't conform to normal, but my favourite has probably got to be Ace, the companion of the Seventh Doctor. So here I bring you some lovely Ace picspam, in chronological order - kind of! Most of the pictures are clickable thumbnails so it shouldn't take too long to load!

Ace related - but not to the picspam as such - in one of my fic universes an older Ace has become leader of Torchwood 4, which is now in Liverpool.

It's possible that, like me, you're enraptured with the new film, but sorely want more of the awesome ladies of that world. To that end, I've put together a little post about some of my favorite ladies, both from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original works and other, similar creations.

So you like Sherlock Holmes — and ladies too.

Okay, so I love Buffy and Angel femslash/female-centric fic. Over the summer last year I went through a long period of being deeply obsessed with it. Though I haven't read much of it lately, I'm cracking out some of my favourite to rec here for you lovely people.

These are all female-centric, some slight het, lots of femslash and odd pairings. I'm not kidding. Odd pairings are my second favourite thing after femslash.

Wilhelmina Slater is a former supermodel, resident Botox loving diva and creative director of MODE magazine. Born Wanda Vivian Slater, she's connived and blackmailed her way to the top of the fashion world, aided in her schemes by her assistant Marc St. James who idolizes her villainous ways and refers to her fondly as "Willie." Wilhelmina's greatest adversary is Daniel Meade, current editor in chief at MODE and the youngest son of the late Bradford Meade-founder of Meade Publishing.

Wilhelmina is a villain in every since the word, unapologetically smart, cunning and ruthless. She’s also one of the most entertaining characters I’ve seen in a long, long time.

St. Trinian's is a film that came out in the UK in 2007. It's actually the sixth film to take place at St. Trinian's School for Young Ladies, but this is a reboot of the franchise. St Trinian's is made of awesome and more awesome. Also it is kinda cheesy, but in an awesome way.

Basic plot summary: To keep the bank from repossessing the school the student body comes up with a plan to steal the 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' painting so they can sell it and pay off the creditors.

Following [livejournal.com profile] tassosss's great post with Star Trek XI recs:

[livejournal.com profile] rubynye writes fantastic Gaila and Uhura -- strong, self-affirming, sex-positive, even when terrible things sometimes happen to them. I highly recommend browsing her gaila and uhura tags, or start with two stories that I've found especially memorable: Light That You Shine and an untitled noncon piece, both Gaila/Jim Kirk. Please heed the author's warnings; many stories, including both of these, contain potentially triggering material. (And many others are unabashedly fun romps, in case that makes you nervous.)

Oh, god, I love this movie! If you want a movie which defines sticking together through thick and through thin, this is definitely one of those. And it may well have you questioning your moral stance. They're on the run because they committed a crime, but technically when it was done they were no longer in danger. They could have just walked away. But the emotion of the situation got the better of things. The situation is made even worse by them then going on the run. Thelma does want to go to the police but Louise tells her "we don't live in that sort of a world". And, sadly, we don't. And I don't know about anyone else but I was sure as hell rooting for them. I also really like how they go through personality switches, with one starting to find the situation too overwhelming so the other decides they have to be the strong one. And I still cry at the end. Every time.

Warning: Image heavy. Spoilers for the movie.

The second part of my Mad Men picspam focuses on Peggy Olson, who starts out as a naive new secretary and rises to become the first woman copywriter at Sterling Cooper since the war. Peggy was one of the big surprises for me of the show; in the first few episodes, it seemed as if she was being brought in just to act out a plausible, but predictable, victimization storyline, and I found watching her rather painful. But now...now? She is the awkward, but brilliant, adorable, and heartbreaking pioneer at Sterling Cooper, someone who understands desire at least as much as creative genius Don Draper does. (Her relationship with him is one of my favorite man-woman TV partnerships of all time.)

Her taste in men is questionable, but give her a break, she's inventing second-wave feminism here! And her fashion sense? Well, it could use a little work. But it's charming, in its own way.

Eugene, I'm in the persuasion business, and frankly I'm disappointed by your presentation.  )

There’s one show recently that has captured my heart with its awesome and sexy ladies...and that is Legend of the Seeker. You’d think that a show with a title that references the male character would be, well, lacking on the girltimes, especially given its epic fantasy genre. (Perhaps especially if you’d read the books the show is based on.)

But you would be wrong, at least as soon as Season 2 begins. Yes, Richard has a plot that’s essential to the story, *handwave*. But there’s only one of him, and there are two fantastic women who are there to kick ass, take names, and roll their eyes like no one’s business. Without them, he would most certainly be doomed, but they can sure handle themselves without him. (And they're just the main cast badass women...not the only ones, certainly.)

Meet Kahlan, Mother Confessor, and Cara, Mord’Sith—together, they make up a set of wondertwins you'd better have on your side if you want to survive in this universe.
