Borrowing a leaf from [personal profile] senmut, have a ficlet for days one and two of this fest.

Title: Day Three Hundred and Fifty
Fandom: Stargate: Atlantis
Character: Teyla Emmagan
Length: 200 words
Rating: G
Warnings: None. Unless rain frightens you.
Notes: I really hate titles, so this one is more the day of Teyla's travelogue, or something.

Title: One Kiss and There's an End
Fandom: Eureka
Prompt: Zoe Carter/Jo Lupo - kiss to save the day
Pairing: Zoe/Jo
Length: 550
Rating: PG
Warning: Fluff. Also, vampire-zombies.
Notes: Eureka is a hazy memory in the distance of time. This is set sometime after the show ended. Also, the prompt was technically Martha Jones and not Zoe, but my brain side-tracked to Zoe and that worked better.

For Arts and Entertainment at [livejournal.com profile] 14valentines

The television world is run by male executives looking at the bottom line with barely any room outside of their nice neat little boxes of what makes successful tv. Mainstream media shows tend to have majority male casts and the Bechdel test is something that you usually hope your show passes once in a while let alone individual episodes. Female characters are often dropped or maligned for "plot" reasons, the expendable characters in favor of their male counterparts.

Fan creations often keep these characters alive, or even reinvent the text. Today I have vid recs for friged or vilified female characters. Some of these are old, some of them are fandom classics, but all of them are worth watching, and if you'd like to give me you're own recs, I'd love to have them.

Note: Some of the links are download only. Right click, save as, and if you don't want to keep them, just delete them afterward.

Supernatural
-- Supernatural has arguably one of the worst track records of keeping women alive on the show and its treatment of female characters in general. The first two vids are about the show as a whole and are criticisms of the text and how fans as a whole continue the denigration of women.

The third vid is about Jess, Sam's girlfriend whose death serves as the source of manpain for Sam through the first season, sacrificed in classic have-to-get-the main-character-to-do-something style.

Women's Work by [personal profile] sisabet and [profile] sockkpuppett (Luminosity)
Meta vid about how the show treats women characters in Supernatural. A fandom classic, but worth watching if you haven't yet.

Still Alive by [personal profile] counteragent
Meta vid about Supernatural fandom and how it treats women characters.

Just Like You (scroll down, it's 7th) by [personal profile] gigglemonster
AU where Jess doesn't die at the beginning of the series and Sam finds her in a small town.

Stargate Atlantis
-- Elizabeth Weir portrayed by Torri Higginson was written off at the end of season 3. Why is still unclear, but most reports agree that Higginson was unhappy with the decision.

Elizabeth Weir through the Multiverse

All about Elizabeth.

Merlin -- When Merlin (BBC) first started, Morgana was a vibrant young woman who spoke her mind and stood up to Uther for what was right. She got punished for it, by Uther, and then by the writers, who then turned her from a 3-dimensional character into a one-note villain. I still love Morgana, but I mourn the character she could have been.

Runaway
by alexp444
Morgana during the growing pressures of season 2.

The Tower by [personal profile] kaydeefalls
Morgana and the ever closing vice around her from living under Uther's rule.

As If By Magic by [profile] powderedmilk
Morgana's transformation through season 3. A contrast of a rather dark subject with a catchy upbeat song.

Criminal Minds -- I'm new to this fandom, but one of the first things I learned about the show was how the producers didn't renew AJ Cook's contract for the 6th season with no real reason given. Agent Jennifer "JJ" Jereau was effectively friged with no replacement. JJ deals with the press and many of the families of victims and is compassionate and kind but also hard as nails when she needs to be to get the job done.

I've got one fic that I'm trying to get out for this challenge (Fringe, Olivia-related), but here are some select women-centric fics I've written in the last year:

Twenty: 24, Renee Walker, Renee/Jack, PG-13. There are many ways the day after can go. This might be one of them. (6k) (Warning: discussion of rape.) AU after 8.07.

Benediction: 24, Renee Walker, Renee/Jack, PG-13. [Sequel to Twenty.] The road to recovery is never a straight route. (6k) (Warning: discussion of rape.)

Purgatory: Predators, Isabelle, Royce/Isabelle, R. Post-movie. The jungle is always quiet at night. Except, of course, for when it isn’t. Isabelle can't get used to that. 6k.

Proof of Life; SGA, Elizabeth Weir, Sheppard/Weir. NC-17. Post-Common Ground fic. In the aftermath of negotiating and nearly losing John's life, Elizabeth finds herself taking action that have long-standing repercussions to their relationship and the entire structure of Atlantis command. 27k, thus far. (WIP)

Prescription for a Relapse: SGA, Elizabeth Weir, Sheppard/Weir. R. When both Sheppard and Weir continue to suffer short relapses into the mind and memories of Thalan and Pheobus, they're forced to confront intensifying feelings and a whole host of complications. (10k)

Hi guys!  Totally adoring this comm btw.

Ok, so like I said in the friending meme, I often use my fic to fill in the blanks or fix the wrongs done to female characters in shows.  Here's a collection of my fic so far that I did like this.

You may notice that even though I rant a lot about the ATROCIOUS use of women in Supernatural, there's only one SPN fic.  This is because there is so damn much to fix I just don't have the time!  I don't write fic very often, and when I do it's rarely over 1,000 words, normally under.  Anyway, here's what I have done...

Self Respect
(Supernatural)  A short poem from Jo Harvelle's POV.  Post S5.  Jo Harvelle never thought she'd say no to Dean, but in the end, all she needed was respect.

The First Time
(Buffy the Vampire Slayer.)  Willow and Tara kiss for the first time, but it's not the first time Willow kissed a girl.  (Willow/Tara, Willow/Cordy)  Nominated for the Willowy Goodness Awards.  (-1,000 words)

The Art of Losing
(Angel, the series.)  Post S4.  Lying comatose, Cordelia tells her story to whoever's listening, the last time she'll have to say her point of view about how she got here. (-1,000 words)

Personal Canon: Cordelia Chase
(Angel)  Follows on from the above fic.  Here, I fix the end of S4.  This is how it should have ended, given the whole Cordelia-is-not-a-victim theme that ran through the entirety of AtS, apart from S4 of course. (-500 words)

Untold Fairytale
(Angel) Basically, Eve gets a personality and backstory.  Post S5.  As she watches the city burn, Eve remembers her relationship with Lindsey and her own eternal life. (a little +1,000 words)

Personal Canon: Eve/Lindsey
(Angel) Doesn't exactly follow on from Fairytale, but this is my opinion of how things should have ended.  And in my mind, they did end this way.  (-500 words)

Moment
(Stargate: Atlantis) Post S3.  This is what would have happened had Elizabeth not been left to the Asurans.  Another fixit fic.  Liz/John.  (-1,000 words)

There are a few more fics, like a Faith/Wes one, and they're linked in my sticky post.  There's also this collection of poems.  I included this because I know a few of you are interested in Greek myth.  This has been unlocked for a brief time, so look now while you can!

threads
Brought together by The Fates, three Greek heroines and anti-heroines come together to tell their part in Theseus' tale.  Featuring Ariadne, Hippolyta and Medea.  (1,500 words)

Hope you enjoy!!

Here are seven of my favorites, vids I found over the years and still rewatch all the time:

Buffyverse
Faith: Living Dead Girl by bradcpu
A powerful, inventive Faith character study. Great choice of song!

Illyria: "Illyria" Opening Credits by illyrium24
The editing is superb, and it really gets the feeling across... Illyria's personal brand of creepy meets badass, demon meets humanity.

Lilah Morgan: without me by sisabet and Dr. Dawn
Evil lawyer issues aside, Lilah Morgan was fun. As is this vid, pure fun to watch.

Buffy Summers: Peacekeeper by sisabet (youtube)
Really beautiful!

Chuck
Sarah Walker: Creator by [livejournal.com profile] talitha78
Thrill is to make it up. The song is the perfect choice for Sarah... so perfect, actually, that it was recently used on the show as well.

Stargate Atlantis
Sam Carter: 'Finders' AU credits by [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper
The credits of a fictional 80s-style tv show ("Birds of Prey meets the A-Team") with Sam Carter, Teyla Emmagan, and Jennifer Keller in the lead roles. I love it to bits.
(note: doesn't run in all players, but VLC works fine.)

Princess Tutu
Hold Me Now by Marissa Panaccio
Strangely compelling. I started watching the anime because of this vid.
