Do you know an exchange, fest, challenge, etc. focused on female characters? Whether it's running now or later in the year, advertise it in the comments and help interested people find it.

Here's a list of the current going things in fandom, centered on female characters (if you've more of them, please let me know)

1. Rarewomen nominations are open. Gooo. You can check here to see what other people are planning to nominate.

2. A Multi-Fandom Women Comment Thon (currently at 17 pages)

3. Multi-fandom Femslash Comment Thon for Femslash February.

4. Womenverse is starting round three! Go sign up and write/make graphics/talk/do whatever with lots of your favorite female characters. (I've been doing this one for two rounds, and have really enjoyed it. It's pretty laid-back, and everyone has been awesome)

5. We love women friending meme (there seems to have been an upsurge of friending memes in the last month)

6. Heroine Big Bang Ever wanted to write 15,000 words about your favorite female characters? Now's the time to do it.

7. Femslash February Kink Meme Free For All hosted on Dreamwidth.

please forgive all typos, I've been trying to pretend I don't have a migraine

ETA, as of 2/3/13:

I have put together a collection of my woman-centric fiction for those who are interested; the link leads to AO3 because it was easier for me to "collect" them all there! These are primarily Star Trek fics, but there's a smattering of others including Fringe, Firefly/Serenity, White Collar, Gaiman's The Endless, and Resident Evil, among others.

Also, I manage a community, [livejournal.com profile] fandom_women, that is meant to be a pan-fandom celebration of women; it's new yet and very quiet but it's there!

Edited to Add: For those of you who like Star Trek, I cannot recommend highly enough the two Valeris stories I have received as gifts:

Every Good Villain by [livejournal.com profile] igrockspock which focuses on Valeris' trial, and

I am not in love with salvation by [livejournal.com profile] medie which focuses on her life afterward and the stories that are told.

[livejournal.com profile] where_no_woman is a multi-canon Star Trek comm for promoting fanworks about all of the female characters in the Trekiverse, from Number One to Janeway to Gaila and back again. We want your gen, your het, your femslash, your acrostic poem about Unnamed Female Alien #13 that is currently occupying a lonely corner in your picspam file. :D

Today we launched our first ever drabble tag event, with the theme of "Love...Is a Many Splendored Thing?"  Come on over and drabble with us!!  Or if you're not in the mood for drabbling, stop by any time to share your fic/vids/icons/recs or participate in our exchanges and challenges--we have a new one about once a month.

(p.s. membership and posting to the comm is currently moderated because of multiple attacks by trojan-planting spambots of evil, but all requests for membership and posts by non-spambots will be approved.)

[livejournal.com profile] rainscene is run by the amazing [livejournal.com profile] darkeyedwolf who draws the unwary LJ user into the wild world of Asian movies and dramas with a careful blend of loving snark and picspams of beautiful people.

Her genre: dangerous ladies tag is a good place to start browsing (SPEC! BOSS! Koshonin!), but there are plenty of amazing ladies to love in all of the entries at [livejournal.com profile] rainscene.

First, a couple of mine: (In my head!canon, all of the women from Sherlock are secretly badass.)

"Hudson's Gang". (PG) Mrs. Hudson and most of the other characters. A short AU story is which Mrs. Hudson is the boss of a criminal organization. ~800 words

"Almost Anyone". (R - WARNINGS for mentions of suicide and rough sex.) Moriarty, Molly Hooper. "The greatest shock of a dead body is how ordinary it looks." And how ordinary it becomes. ~800 words.

More recs: (This is where you discover I'm a huge Molly fangirl and a Molly/Jim shipper, to boot.)

"Home Is Where", by Mad_Maudlin. (PG-13) Molly, Jim. "Home is the place where, when you have to go there,
They have to take you in." ~2,000 words.

"No Surprises", by [livejournal.com profile] rachel2205. (R - references to sex and murder.) Molly Hooper, Moriarty. When Molly discovers the truth about her boyfriend "Jim" she's more intrigued than horrified, and in her search to find him proves herself to be stronger and smarter than anyone thought. ~2,000 words.

Finally, I have to rec the community I co-mod with the lovely Rachel: [livejournal.com profile] sherlockhet. Rachel decided to set it up for me after I wondered to her what a het fan like myself was doing in such a slashy fandom as Sherlock!

There's a lot of great stories about the women in Sherlock posted there, and if you have some you'd like to add, please do! We subscribe to a loose definition of "het", so the barest of connection to co-ed relationships will qualify! Mostly, I'd just be interested to collect more stories about the female characters there, so if you've got a fic about Sally, Molly, Sarah, Mrs. Hudson, Harry, Clara, etc--bring it over!

[livejournal.com profile] pike_numberone is hosting a week-long Number One Gen Fest, and is looking for drabbles, fanart, stories, meta, and recs about Number One that focusses not on a romantic relationship with Pike, but on her character as a woman, a Starfleet officer, and an individual. TOS, AOS, Mirror Universe, whatever strikes your fancy!

So, I've been kinda sorta having a Star Trek renaissance for the last year. And it's resulted in a LOTTA stuff, including fanfic, fan art, icons, recs, and meta. Here is a links list of all the stuff I've done, and what other folks have done, what is ALL ABOUT THE LADIES )

In January of last year, after getting a bit fed up with the lack of attention paid to female characters in Primeval fandom, we ran a Fabulous Females Fest over on [livejournal.com profile] primeval_canon. We decided to run the same thing this year and due to my complete lack of organisation and the joys of alliteration, we scheduled it for February.

And that's when I was pointed over to this comm, which I didn't know existed before then! (So thanks to [livejournal.com profile] vivien529 for the pointer and yay! for celebration of female characters.)

So in the spirit of bringing something to the table, I hope it's okay for me to link to the fic, icons etc that were produced last year. There's a whole tag for it, and everything can be found here.

I'm in no way officially connected to Fanlore, but I do sometimes get bitten by the wiki bug and spend several months at a time poking around on the site. Fanlore is still in beta stage, and is significantly lacking in some areas--and articles about female characters (along with het and femslash pairings) are definitely scarce.

I want to do a little project as part of [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon, and it occurred to me that maybe other members of the comm might be interested in doing this with me. If your favourite female character doesn't have a Fanlore page of her own, create one! If she has a stubby page, add a bit of info! If you aren't comfortable editing the wiki yourself, drop me a line and I'll edit the wiki for you.

* See the articles about TOS and Reboot Uhura for an idea of what a fleshed-out article might include.
* See Naruto's Haruno Sakura for an example of an article which is currently a stub.

There are a lot of female characters who have very little--or no!--representation on the wiki yet. The Merlin (BBC) ladies, Buffy Summers, Dana Scully, Doctor Who's female companions, or the many awesome ladies of Bleach and Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Editing Fanlore isn't always intuitive, but I found the editing cheatsheet and templates pages fairly helpful. I'm no expert at wiki editing, but again, I'd be more than happy to offer what help I can to anyone who asks.

In honor of [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon, this month's prompt over at [livejournal.com profile] sg_prompts is "woman's work". Hopefully we'll have an entry or three showing just how much the women of the SG world(s) kick ass. *g*

Any and all entries will be able to be found with this tag when created.

Thanks!

First off I'd recommend checking out [livejournal.com profile] galpalficathon: I Will Not Be Afraid of Women: A Female Friendships Ficathon. It ran a couple of months ago, and produced some excellent female character centered fic.

My favorite fic from that batch was Latter Days by [livejournal.com profile] pellucid(Laura Roslin, Anastasia Dualla).

On the topic of BSG:
This Is the Role of Angels Who Have Begun to Defy God by [livejournal.com profile] nicole_anell(Caprica-Six/Baltar). Excellent look into the intriguing mind of Caprica Six.

[Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] is an exchange-based ficathon celebrating female characters in the media today. Het, gen, and femslash are all available options (with boyslash available as a background pairing only, due to the nature of the challenge), and there are 32 official fandoms, with the option for a wildcard entry.

Read through the rules, the list of available fandoms, and sign up here. Last year's ficathon got over 60 stories, and we'd like to equal (or preferably surpass) that this year.

Fics must be 1000 words minimum, and stories aren't due until May 1st.

Posted with permission.

There are over two dozen wonderful stories about women posted at [livejournal.com profile] spn_xx, and plenty of room for more. The comm was started as a place for any and all fic featuring canon female characters from Supernatural, including crossovers in both directions -- SPN women visiting elsewhere, and female characters from other sources straying into the SPN 'verse. There's a huge list of prompts here. The master list for the original challenge is here, with additional stories appearing subsequently. Enjoy them, and add your own if so inclined!

I've torn through my rec lists, bookmarks and memories to compile a short list of 35 stories featuring the amazing female characters from 'Battlestar Galactica'.

I think I managed to get at least one story featuring each character (expect Ellen Tigh) on the list, there are original characters, ensemble pieces, character studies, action stories.... This list is mostly Gen or gen'ish stories featuring the multitude of canon relationships as part of the stories (some might call them Bob) with some Het thrown in as well. BSG fandom has an amazingly well-tagged fem-slash community: [livejournal.com profile] bsg_femslash masterlist (del.icio.us and a community dedicated to the female characters: [livejournal.com profile] bsg_women. Both are great places to find more fanworks of different types.

Featured here are Six, Gina, Boomer, Athena, Dee, Kara, Laura, Racetrack, Kat, Seelix, Jean, Tory, Elosha, Cally, Cain and several original characters.

Warning: Spoilers for everything aired to date! )

I'd like to promote a comm I've been watching with interest-- [livejournal.com profile] torchbearers. Most posts right now are from [livejournal.com profile] digital_femme, but the community is theoretically open to anyone who wants to throw a spotlight on an interesting black female character from comics or manga. ([livejournal.com profile] digital_femme also posts occasional roundups of links dealing with race-related discussions in the comics blogosphere, and has a gift for picking out interesting meta.)

Some of my personal favorite spotlight posts:

From indie comics: Narcissa, from graphic novel Narcissa created by Lance Tooks.

From Marvel: Monica Rambeau, an ex-Captain Marvel and former team leader of the Avengers-- in this sequence, she's lost her superpowers, but manages to kick ass even without them.

From DC: Amanda Waller. She's run various scary quasi-fascist government agencies and overseen some of the DCU's most secret black ops missions. You do not want to mess with "The Wall." These scans show just one example of why.

Historical interest: Friday Foster-- (more scans here.) Friday Foster was the first black female character to be the lead of her own syndicated comic strip, written by Jim Lawrence and stylishly illustrated by Jorge Longeron. (There was also a movie starring Pam Grier and Yaphet Kotto-- it came out in 1975.)

So, if you're interested, join and watch [livejournal.com profile] torchbearers!
