Maria DeLuca from Roswell New Mexico is probably my favorite "best friend" character. I planned on making one icon for each season, but there's a bonus season 3 icon because I couldn't decide on my favorite image and that happens to be my favorite season.

Maria is a great support character for a lot of reasons. The best thing about her character is that she evolves into a main character with her own independent story line by season three. ( Some meta & major spoilers under here. )

The Hulu TV series The Great has fantastic costumes. The show is set in 18th century Russia, and the best outfits of the show are worn by Catherine The Great. I love how the designers pushed the envelope and really showed Catherine's growth over the three-season series through her costumes.

She would have been able to mentor Yelena Belova! I'm not sure that they would be close, considering how long it had been since they'd spent time together in canon - but I definitely think Natasha would have wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to see her again and work towards being sisters who actually spend time together.

These words were uttered by Kennedy in episode 7x11 “Showtime” when she was still a Potential Slayer.
Before her, a long line of young women, the “Chosen Ones,” shared the same mission and the same fate: carrying the weight of the world at the cost of their own young lives.

Age has, in fact, always been a key factor in the mystical power that perpetuated the calling of the Slayer through centuries and millennia. And also in their untimely death.
In fact, there’s one thing that, as far as we can tell, all the Slayers have in common: called young, died young. Aging, as a matter of fact, doesn’t seem to be in the cards for the Chosen Ones. Or at least it wasn’t, until one girl came along and changed the rules…

A little late, but this post is all about Liz from Roswell New Mexico! First, icons I made this past year:

scintilla10 for the prompt: science! I love that the show is very consistent about Liz's science passion. Liz has the drive to continually make scientific discoveries and push her knowledge forward, and this ambition sometimes gets her into trouble when she uses alien DNA without permission. Her passion for scientific discovery is often at odds with her passion for Max Evans, and sometimes she does choose the science - by avoiding his questions, or by deliberately hiding what she's up to. This is because of what the science symbolizes for Liz.

Science as a discipline is supposed to be methodical, reliable, and rational. She can dive into an experiment, feel completely in her element, and forget all about her personal life. She can always learn something new, even when experiments go wrong or she calculates something incorrectly. Her time is never wasted because her work is always going to be important. Science is also a means of escape for her. She worked her whole life to get good grades and get into a great school and master's program - so that she could land a meaningful research project (and be gainfully employed outside of Roswell). Science gave her a future she might not have had otherwise. People disappoint Liz, but the science never does. That's why it's so hard for her to put her work down - it's a big part of who she is.

Theme: Day 6: Secrets and/or Lies

Note: SPOILERS for BtVS S6 ahead
I believe that Season 6 of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” could be the one that best represents this theme. Everyone is keeping secrets, and everyone is lying about something... and there’s always someone paying the consequences.
I also think that the biggest secret/lie is the one that Buffy keeps/tells to her friends: the fact that she was in heaven but tells them that they pulled her out of a hell dimension.
So I picked two episodes that represent Buffy’s confession to the audience through Spike (banner), and Buffy’s revelation to everyone through Sweet’s spell (icons).
There are also other secrets/lies that are discovered during this episode (Willow using a mind-altering spell on Tara; Xander and Anya’s doubts about their upcoming married life) or will be discovered later (Dawn’s kleptomania).
More secrets and lies will pile up after this episode, but I had to make a choice. Also, I didn’t have time to adjust the coloring... so some icons are a bit off. Sorry about that!

Today I wrote some meta about Charlie Cameron from Roswell New Mexico! Thanks to jocarthage on tumblr for the prompt. Charlie was a bioweapons engineer for the military at some point before canon, and got very good at keeping Government secrets. However, she decided to leak unspecified classified documents, and when her sister Jenna realized what Charlie did, she reported her. Charlie was subsequently arrested and convicted. She eventually escapes military prison, and that's how her character joins the show in season 2.

Her character has many similarities with Chelsea Manning. ( More about that under here. )

This prompt screamed Buffy to me. She literally poured all her blood, sweat, and tears into her job of saving the world from the forces of darkness and was vastly underappreciated for it too. She was a heroine who deserves all the love and understanding.

I made a banner of Buffy for the challenge which you can find HERE on my journal, but I also want to share a flashback clip of one of my favorite scenes from the show. It's the scene where Buffy tells her mom Joyce about being the slayer. It's such a powerful moment. The acting! The writing! The emotion! It's everything. They really don't make TV shows like this anymore.

Meta:
Change happens in many ways, for everyone. Sometimes we seek that change, sometimes circumstances force us to make a change, sometimes there are changes in our environment that affect us (in)directly. Sometimes we might feel the need to change our appearance or our attitude or both.
Life is change.
The fanart I present today is about supernatural ladies, so their changes are not exactly relatable, but the way they changed followed the same rules: some of them decided they wanted to change, some had the change forced on them, some were driven by the circumstances.
All of them found a new power within.
Some used it to do good, some to do evil, some were lingering in a grey area between the two.
Sometimes change is for the better, sometimes it’s for the worse... either way, we must power through.
