For today's theme I thought it would be nice to make a rec list for Barbara Wright: original Doctor Who companion, history teacher, and crusher of Daleks with a truck. It was hard to keep this list to a reasonable length--or it would have been, if not that AO3 went down for a bit in the middle of making it! XD

Footprints in History (5409 words) by ThisNothingInTheMiddle
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Doctor Who, Doctor Who (1963), Doctor Who (Big Finish Audio)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Barbara Wright, Evelyn Smythe, Vicki Pallister, Sixth Doctor, First Doctor, Ian Chesterton
Additional Tags: There's not much Ian though, Sorry Chunsterton
Summary: In ancient Egypt, amidst the creation of history on the Giza plateau, Barbara Wright is approached by Dr Evelyn Smythe, who explains that they have a friend in common. Meanwhile, the Doctor runs into an old, young friend. Can they discover who is meddling with history?

Rec notes: Barbara crosses paths with fellow historian-companion Evelyn in this lovely piece with very good characterization. (And bonus Six & Vicki!) Being familiar with the Sixth Doctor helps, but the story doesn't depend on any details of his and Evelyn's adventures.

Runaway Colleague (5247 words) by paranoidangel
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Doctor Who (1963)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Ian Chesterton/Barbara Wright
Characters: Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence
Summary: Coming home offered Barbara Wright the chance to make a settled, secure life for herself. But there was a complication – in the shape of her ex-colleague Ian Chesterton.

It would have been easy for Barbara to seduce Ian. But not so simple to explain the secret she was keeping hidden. If Ian learned the truth, would he be so keen to reclaim his runaway colleague?

AU where only Barbara followed Susan to Totter's Lane.

Rec notes: Interesting AU (written for [community profile] unconventionalcourtship), making An Unearthly Child just that little bit more timey-wimey. And the tone is perfect.

Time to Build Up (2510 words) by IncomingAlbatross

Additional Tags: Post-Serial: s016 The Chase, London 1965!, Fluff, the happy wholesome fluff they deserve, you know the montage at the end of the chase?, i'm going for that mood here, but domestic and romantic on top of the happy
Summary: Ian and Barbara coming home, preparing to take up normal lives again...but preparing together. Because that's what they do.
(And with a little unexpected help from the Doctor, as it turns out. Because that's what he does.)

Rec notes: Adorable Ian/Barbara fluff. With some companions it's hard to picture them ever being happy in a normal life again; but in this fic, for Barbara and Ian, you can see how normal life will be the adventure.

Characters: First Doctor (Doctor Who), Barbara Wright
Additional Tags: Triple Drabble, TARDIS weirdness
Summary: The Doctor and Barbara's trip to the library takes an interesting turn.

You will find them there, in the soft living room with their old ghosts and their new clothes.

They have been here for a very long time, since the start of time.

They have only just arrived.

Three pre-existing works of mine that fit today's prompt, all on AO3, all G/Teen-rated, all gen or mostly so, all fairly short. [Aside to mods: Castle appears not to have a fandom tag.]

Five College Careers Alexis Castle Might Consider (And the Consequences Thereof)
Castle (with dashes of Buffyverse & NCIS)

What it says on the tin - a Five Things piece speculating about Alexis' choice of college, including two that lead into crossover territory. (Do read the comments; actual students/alums from two of the schools mentioned chimed in.)

Career Day

NCIS/Sarah Jane Adventures

Abby is just packing up her "Career Day" booth at a local high school when an English transfer student happens by - and the conversation takes an unexpected direction. Inspired by a series of stories by Azar featuring Abby as a past companion of the Doctor's.

A Little Self-Knowledge
Nancy Drew (books)

Similar in subject matter to the Castle piece, though here Nancy (very lightly updated to the present day from the yeilow-spine books) is discussing college plans with her Aunt Eloise over lunch. Both Ned Nickerson and the Hardy boys come up in the conversation, albeit for different reasons.

For the Aimless Adventures prompt, and getting even more fully into the spirit of that, this is therefore nothing more than a collection of the last few female-centric Doctor Who works I've bookmarked (all obviously highly excellent however):

Fic: Three Times Vicki Used Fire for Good and One Time She Didn't by LissyStrata
(G, 2537 words. Vicki Pallister, First Doctor, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright, Steven Taylor, Ace McShane.) This was written for austerlitzborodinoleipzig as part of the Classic Who Secret Santa on tumblr, who wanted Vicki being awesome. So please enjoy the timeless combination of Vicki + fire. And indeed what can possibly go wrong with the winning combo of Vicki + wanton arson? It's a joy.

Fanmix: An Unearthly Child - A Susan Foreman Fanmix by [personal profile] newmoonstar
(All ages, 6 tracks. Susan Foreman). Songs for the Doctor's first companion, his granddaughter Susan. What it says, and a lovely mix.

Fic: Questions Answered Before the Asking by [personal profile] lyssie
(G, 700 words. Thirteenth Doctor/River Song.) Thirteen discovers a DVD she wasn't expecting. The message it contains is one she can't resist answering. (No actual meeting between them occurs) Excellent bit of timey-wimey Thirteen/River.

Fic: Deal at the Docks by [personal profile] john_amend_all
(G, 1713 words. Tegan Jovanka, Vicki Pallister, Sabbath. AU.) A few hours in the life of Tegan Jovanka, private detective. Okay, so Tegan is a PI and Vicki is a pirate captain, clearly a thing that everyone needs in their life.

Vid: This Is Our Time by [personal profile] such_heights
(N/A. Thirteen + team, plus other New Who characters). Will you still remember me when all of this is over? Gorgeous Thirteen-era-centric vid.

Art: Genderbent Who by surrenderdammit
(G. Doctors 1-11, The Master. AU.) My designs for the genderbent version of the 1st to 11th Doctor, as well as Jack Harkness and a temporary design of the Master. An old one (pre-Thirteen and Missy) that I found belatedly, but I love these female versions of the previous Doctors, with some great little details in them.

Fic: Spark of Life by [personal profile] auroracloud
(G, 2427 words. Bill Potts/Thirteenth Doctor, Twelfth Doctor. AU.) Suddenly, it's the end for Bill's Doctor. Except that it's also a beginning, and Bill is there to see it. This is a really sweet little fixit for Bill and the Doctor.

Fic: Elementary Particles: reprinted from the reminiscences of Professor Bernice S. Summerfield by [personal profile] pedanther
(Teen, 1245 words. Bernice Summerfield, Seventh Doctor, Vastra, Jenny Flint.) "A lot of the facts have been changed, mind you. I don't remember half of these things happening. And it's odd reading about Holmes and Watson, rather than—" — Bernice Summerfield, All-Consuming Fire// "The veiled detective and her fatuous accomplice... You realise Doctor Doyle is almost certainly basing his fantastical tales on your own exploits? With a few choice alterations, of course." - Doctor Simeon, The Snowmen Excellent merging of New Who and the NAs with great Benny diary entries.

Fic: A TARDIS of One's Own by [personal profile] nostalgia
(Teen, 3076 words. Weir!Doctor/Delgado!Master, Jo Grant, Liz Shaw, the Brigadier, Kate Stewart, John Benton, Mike Yates.) She's stuck on Earth, feminism hasn't quite taken hold, and her best enemy wants into her pants. The Doctor's exile on Earth, remixed somewhat. A brilliant (and importantly, actually good and very funny) remix of Big Finish's Unbound attempts at a female Doctor.

Today's theme is Time and Space. I have six fic recs for The-Files, including one crossover with Doctor Who.

I had to go back and edit my first two posts. After further thought, I decided that several stories weren't focused enough on the female characters, even though they fit the day's theme. But these all pass muster, on both counts.

"The Sin Eater" is a classic science fiction story, complete with time travel and alternative history. It is also a brilliant character study of Mulder, but told from entirely from Scully's point of view. Finally, it illustrates just how much Mulder would give up in order to save his partner's life. Though written in 1996, which certainly qualifies it for fandom classic status, the writing feels very contemporary. If you only read one X-Files story from this list, make it this one.

The Sin Eater by Jane Mortimer
Rated PG | 54K | Category TRA | Archived 96-05-31

Keywords: Mulder/Scully. Alternate universe.
Summary: Scully disappears into a mysterious vortex and Mulder makes an unbelievable sacrifice to insure her safe return.

If there is one author I could choose to emulate, it would be Jess M, because of her range. She could—and did—write well in every genre: comedy, tragedy, case files, smut muffins. This is her time travel fic. The summary says it better than I could.

Keywords: Mulder/Scully romance.
Summary: Mulder and Scully must decide whether the possibility of saving the world would be worth never knowing the other existed.

The very first sentence of "Ever After" sets the tone for this gripping story. I'd read this so many years ago that I'd forgotten the title. But the story itself was so memorable that I easily found it again with keywords.

Ever After by Jill Selby
Classification: XA
Relationship: Mulder/Scully UST
Rating: PG

Summary: Past and present collide, unleashing a deadly threat only Scully can see.

I found "Journey" on the time travel list at The X-Files Lost and Found. It is a little more romantic than what I usually read but don't let that put you off. Zuffy is a fine writer and this is a well-crafted and suspenseful fic.
