I've always felt this vid, a study of Teyla's broadening sense of "home" (with certain John/Teyla overtones), never got its proper due in fandom. I'm not sure that its central technical conceit, which some viewers may find a little distracting, entirely works--like "This Is How It Works", its style of fading into and out of short clips evokes a dreamy, remembered quality, but it doesn't quite add the same layers of meaning as in that vid. Nonetheless, it brings to bear on Teyla the kind of thoughtful vidder's gaze that lets you re-see certain overlooked moments as suddenly fraught with meaning. And it's also got several genuinely gorgeous sequences (especially around 2:25, the flight of the jumper fading into Teyla sweeping across the sparring mat). Worth watching if you care for Teyla at all.

GetBackers
(Hevn, Himiko, Madoka, Sakura, Natsumi, Clayman, Ren, Rena)

GetBackers is a manga and anime about a couple of dorks (with superpowers!) named Ban and Ginji. They have various (superpowered!) friends and foes, and get in all sorts of trouble as they go about trying to "get back what shouldn't be gone" as a retrival duo by the name of "GetBackers."

The series is dorky and angsty--sometimes even at the same time!--and I heart it despite it's many flaws.

Check out [livejournal.com profile] gisho's overview, or my far less detailed one.

GetBackers has some great female characters, although it isn't a series I'd pick up if you don't have a strong stomach for fanservice (the anime is far better on this count than the manga). The female characters will usually end up with torn clothes, and most of them have gigantic breasts that hardly fit into their clothes to begin with. One of our heroes also thinks it's perfectly okay to sneak up behind a woman and grope her breasts.

GetBackers is far from an enlightened feminist story, but the fans more than make up for that.

About a year ago, [livejournal.com profile] naewinter and I started a newsletter designed to gather links related to fannish content centred on female characters. Every week we'd scour the 'Net for fic, meta, art, contests, communities, icons, vids and a whole lot more about women. Sadly, circumstances have since arisen that lead to neither of us having the time to keep it up, and I miss compiling it a lot. However, there's still thirty issues from last year, all full of shiny links to gen, het and slash from many fandoms. Also the memories section has them all sorted by fandom, content and character.

Go check it out at [livejournal.com profile] girlgerms_news.

I intended to post these last night, so naturally I forgot. *g*

Twenty icons (or icon bases) from Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda are located behind the cut. Beka, Rommie, and Trance are each represented, though most of the icons are of Trance.

Neither comments nor credit are necessary. If you see something you like, please feel free to take it!

I've posted this WIP to my journal and the usual Pirates places, but I'm happy to post it here as an Elizabeth-centered fic set after At World's End.

Title: In Thought or Deed (all tag)
Disclaimer: These characters aren't stolen, simply borrowed - borrowed without permission - for personal, not commercial, purposes.
Pairing(s): (f/f) Elizabeth/Jade (an Empress twin), (m/f) Elizabeth/Jack (eventually).
Chapters: 6/? (How do even my short fics end up being as long as novels?!) Rating: varies from PG to R so far.
A/N: Elizabeth's Chinese nickname is pronounced “Tyen-Uh,” though it seems to be written as “Tian'E.”
Summary:
For Elizabeth, the world may be ended, but she is still forced to live in it. Winds carry her to Singapore, where she learns to fight, encounters a mysterious man of business from Shanghai, and hears tales of a mystical amulet that affords its bearer the ability to hear others' thoughts, giving them the power to connect with loved ones far away and sense instantly any treachery close at hand.
Chapters so far: C.1 "The Flash of the Sword," C.2 "The Night Drum, " C. 3 " The Woman on the Moon," C.4 "River of Silver," C.5 "White Swan, Black Crane, C.6 "The Mouth of the Yang-Tze."

I wrote this last October for [info]trustno1_redux, one of many The X-Files re-watch communities currently in progress on LiVE JOURNAL. It was supposed to be the Meta for the pilot episode, but I don't think I have a very meta-ish mind. The Emily Dickinson poem I stole the title from is wonderful; the essay is- okay.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kissingchaos9 and [livejournal.com profile] secrethappiness for the betas and to The Dresden Dolls for the title. Expanded from what was previously known as the “Lonely!Vicky-T AU,” this is just a snippet of a universe, but I think it stands alone as a ficlet, too.

(Victoria isn’t looking for anyone … yeah, maybe sometimes she ends up in the elevator with one of the two guys from 4b and can’t think of anything to say. But it’s not because she wants to or because she is longing for something or because she sees the way that they touch each other – small and public and easy – and feels something ache.)

I'm a mod of [livejournal.com profile] idol_reflection, a multifandom community for meta essays about characters people like and want to introduce to other fans. Behind the cut, links to 31 essays posted there about female characters in 14 fandoms, many including fanfic recs and links to character-centric communities:

lots and lots of shiny here )

Also, if you'd be interested in sharing your love for a favorite character, feel free to check out the claims list and consider writing an essay of your own; we've got far fewer essays about female characters than male characters, and I'd love to see more women represented. (Anybody for Teyla? Ginny Weasley? Barbara Gordon? Laura Roslin? Martha Jones? All currently up for grabs.)

Author: Jengrrrl
Fandom: She-Ra
Disclaimer: I own not.
A/N: This is an AU of the "She-Ra" animated series, told from Cat(ra)'s point of view. Cat/Adora. Contains violence, strong language, and sexuality. Originally written for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide, but I think it fits the spirit of this community very nicely.

I just thought I might point out two ficathons that were running in 2007 and that will probably be of interest to those watching this community. The implicit goal of both fic exchanges was to "rescue" the characters of Buffy Summers (from Buffy -- well, duh) and Rose Tyler (from Doctor Who) from neglicence and romance and let them be all heroic and adventurous.

My favourite story from the Rose Tyler: Girl Adventurer Ficathon at [livejournal.com profile] rose_lives was probably [livejournal.com profile] livii's Go Places, but the whole list is well worth checking out.

For [livejournal.com profile] ruuger's Buffy Is the Hero, Damnit! Ficathon, [livejournal.com profile] likadeuce wrote the marvellous ensemble piece Four Times Buffy Surprised Someone, which has a wonderful future in store for her. But [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight's Road Trip is a real hoot, too!

I have a Silent Hill 4 story I wanted to link here, and [livejournal.com profile] geekturnedvamp though it might be better with a few notes.

Contains major spoilers for the game Silent Hill 4. )

Title: Inside Eileen/Cynthia, PG, AU.

I also wanted to give some recs of other Silent Hill stories, though I'm not the best with getting in lots of reading and making recs unfortunately.

Here are a few great stories from a friend of mine centering around Maria, a character from the second game. I liked how these stories bring out her own personality and not only how she plays off the main character, James. (These particular stories I've recced here aren't quite as profoundly disturbing as Silent Hill fics tend to be, though it's still a horror fandom.)

It's Not Mine (humor, a little profanity)

Lights Out (contains images of horror and violence and a little profanity)

A Problem Like Maria (probably R but for profanity, contains some slight Maria/James)

And here's a story written by [livejournal.com profile] rabbitprint for the Silent Hill Movie for a prompt I gave at [livejournal.com profile] yuri_challenge. It's surreal and a little cryptic and I loved it. (Contains major spoilers for the ending.)

I started this list in January as a response to a post on [livejournal.com profile] spnstoryfinders: These are fics that center on female characters or include them in a major way. Various pairings, a few gen fics.

Comics is one of the most complicated and fraught fandoms for women, on the one hand offering opportunities for stories about extraordinary, five-times-larger-than-life women who by definition will transcend normal physical limitations and mundane lives to do remarkable things, but on the other tending to cater to the most unattractive male adolescent power fantasies. The potential keeps drawing us back in, even though the reality can be horribly frustrating. [livejournal.com profile] liviapenn and I ran an obscure-character challenge for comics called Comica Obscura for a couple of years, and the thing I'm most proud of about the challenge is that the ratio of male to female feature characters was almost fifty-fifty. Behind the cut, a list of the stories that featured female characters:

It takes a superpowered woman to get a dirty job done )

Give one a shot! There are the deadliest martial artists in the world, genius hackers, top spies, magicians, crackerjack journalists...With many independents as well as the more traditional superhero lines represented, you just might find something new and cool.
[identity profile] shati.livejournal.com
Under the cut are links to vids I haven't seen recced here yet, all focused on female characters. They don't make an alphabet, because the alphabet is beyond my cognitive powers at the moment, but they make awesome. Some of them are depressing, some of them are funny, some of them cause joy to leak out my ears (Whatever It Takes, I'm looking at you), and they're all worth watching.

We put them there )

Title: A Woman's Touch
Fandom: James Bond
Rating: PG-13
Summary: There are some missions for which only a woman's touch will do.
Disclaimer: James Bond was created by the inimitable Ian Fleming and is owned by the Brocoli Family. He is merely being used as the Ken doll in a Barbie world, or some such.
Quick Note: While GoldenEye and Casino Royale are the only Bond movies I can stand to view more than once, this story is firmly placed in the world of the 60's Bond movies. Think Sean Connery rather than Pierce Brosnan and you'll get the idea.

( Bond appeared in her office, a vodka sodden force of nature )
