My latest fannish love is Sherlock, but I will be the first to admit--and lament--that the show is one big boys' club. With that in mind, I recommend two fics that address the particularly execrable depiction of Molly Hooper, the meek pathologist treated with disdain by Sherlock and the show alike.

[livejournal.com profile] rosa_acicularis, The Anatomist: This is a completely brilliant and gleefully savage rewriting of Molly within the canon as we have seen it. It turns everything on its head, so that her scenes, which were excruciating to watch, suddenly become almost satisfying. Rarely have I seen a female character so thoroughly reclaimed by fandom. And it's an absorbing and chilling story in its own right. (This is, technically, a WIP, but even if the last part is never posted, what already exists stands well on its own.)

[livejournal.com profile] introductory, that thing you love: And...coming from the other direction entirely, this hilarious little fic has Molly finding love in the arms of the Old Spice Guy. No, I swear, it's actually funny, and not just the mechanical "wackiness" that one so often finds under the label "crack."

"Anything is possible when your man is me and not a sociopathic, homosexual private detective," said Isaiah, grinning widely.

*

I'd love to see recs for other stories that recoup the ladies of Sherlock. It's a seriously uphill battle!

Rating: PG for language.
Characters: That would be telling. *g*

Disclaimer: Not mine. Just borrowing for a bit of shameless mocking. No infringement intended.

Around middle of last year, I wrote about characters I loved for a meme. And the first one I did was a rather long meta about one of my favourite fictional ladies, Rue from Princess Tutu, a character I feel is often underappreciated in fandom. I talk about how unique and beautiful her character arc was to me and I thought I would share it here.

Cut for length and major spoilers!

Mongol is a 2007 film about the early life of Genghis Khan (Temudgin). It was shot in Mongolia, entirely in the Mongolian language, which alone is enough to qualify as insanely cool. However, what really steals the show for me is the awesome female characters: Temudgin's amazing wife Borte and his tough-as-nails mother Oelun.

Who doesn't love some good female character discussion? :D

A love letter to Rachel Berry of Glee fame, explaining what makes her my favorite character on the show.

Semi-organized thoughts on Black Swan, focused almost entirely on Nina's character.

Reeling from the disappointment of the lesbian Rambo movie, I went out in search of campy good fun with women kicking ass. With Vampire Warriors, I knew I'd found exactly what I'd been hoping for.

With that title, I hope you have some idea of what you're in for beneath the cut. There may be a few spoilers if, you know, you care about being spoiled for Vampire Warriors.
