The Unpopular Woman Love Post

It's pretty natural that some female characters do worse in fandom than others, right? And sometimes it's difficult, if not downright impossible, to find a place where you can fan these characters in peace, or fellow fans to fan them with. Not to mention trying to find fanworks about them. Experience says: It hard.

So, stealing the idea shamelessly from [livejournal.com profile] doyle_sb4's Women of Doctor Who celebration post, here is a love post for the unpopular female characters. Like in [livejournal.com profile] doyle_sb4's post, you start a thread with the character's name and their respective fandom in the subject line, after which people are free to share fic and vid recs, picspams, links to essays, defenses or simply thoughts of love about the character in question. Because unpopularity is a subjective thing most of the time, the character doesn't have to be somebody you know to be the fandom underdog for sure, but if the character also has a large number of fans it would be good to give some reasons about why they're hated and why it's wrong. Links to the character threads will be collected in this post.

Being a post for unpopular characters, this is a bashing free post. If you have any negative opinions about the characters discussed or the fandom rivals of the character of your choice, please keep them to yourself.

And now, knock yourselves out!

ETA: The character and the fandom should both be named in the subject line, I forgot to mention the fandom initially. Sorry about the inconvenience!

ETA 2: If you want to share you thoughts about a character who has a thread, please reply to the thread in question. General comments and threads for new characters go to the main post.

DITTO. I loved Diana; I thought she brought some depth to Mulder's history at first, and then I grew to love her for herself. She was complex, clearly believed in what she was doing (when we first met her) and who always believed that what she was doing would ultimately serve the greater good. That made her compelling and someone I always wished had been explored better in the course of the show - thank goodness for fanfic!

I loved her - and everyone - in Proving Ground, which is absolutely my favourite episode of SG-1. And I ship Elliot/Hailey like burning, which makes it really disappointing that she doesn't have more fans. I need fic for my obscure OTPs!

Sakura (Naruto)

Date: 2009-02-07 02:03 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] anenko.livejournal.com
Sakura is often accused of being weak and useless. Some fans are kind enough to allow that she's kind of cool after the timeskip, when she can punch holes into the ground.

I think Sakura has *always* been awesome, even she was petty and unthinkingly cruel in her obession over Sasuske. She grew up a lot faster than many fans give her credit for.

From: [identity profile] robina1984.livejournal.com
Sakura rocks. Naruto has this great chakra and stanima, Sasuke is a genius, but Sakura held her own by the power of her brain. She may not have been the brawler the boys were, but she also wasn't trying to prove herself like Naruto (to the village) and Sasuke (his brother) were. I liked her better before the timeskip...but she still rocks!

Dawn grew on me, especially in the last season. I heard that the rold was originally written for a girl a few years youngerm which explains a lot of the season 5 annoyances. Even so, I always felt her story was interesting and in the last season she was just plain awesome.

Maya Herrera (Heroes)

Date: 2009-02-07 02:37 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] visiblemarket.livejournal.com
She was never exactly my favorite character, and the direction they've taken her lately has really annoyed me, but I had a genuine fondness for her in S2.

Despite the weepiness, despite the lack of control, despite the complete and utter dependence on her brother and the fact that she completely played into Sylar's manipulations, I still felt for her. Maybe because of all that, actually, and maybe because of the fandom's reaction to all that.

Because Mohinder in S1 was just as easily duped by Sylar (more so, in my mind, because at least he knew about the existence of Sylar, and should've maybe been a little more suspicious earlier), and that whole adventure bred most popular pairing #1, Mylar. And Peter was just about as indecisive and ultimately dependent on his brother to keep him from killing tons of people, which brings us to most popular pairing #2, Petrellicest. Neither of those characters are quite as generally disliked as Maya, which automatically made me a little protective of her.

And while I might have been frustrated by a lot of aspects of her character, I didn't hate her. I actually found a lot of her most frustrating attitudes, towards her power and her brother, to be logical extensions of what she'd been through. There were hints enough of her past that made me think before it all got started, she'd been a pretty interesting and independent young woman, within the confines of a still very machismo-focused culture.

She spoke English even though her brother didn't, for one; I realize it was most likely for plot purposes, but I liked the idea of it, of her getting educated and wanting (in my mind at least) to improve her situation a little.

The depiction of her faith also interested me; Heroes treads lightly on questions of religion (or did, up to S3), but I think realistically certain characters would definitely embrace their faith to get through all the crazy stuff they're going through. And it didn't seem heavy handed with Maya; that good old standby for angst, Catholic Guilt, was a lot more better played with her than it ever was with Sylar, at least in my mind. Less drama, less creepy rooms, but a genuine crisis of doubt and attempt at forgiveness.

So I liked Maya. Hated her storyline, but not any more so than I hated most storylines in S2, but liked her. Of course S3 ditched just about anything interesting about her and turned her into sluttily-dressed and strangely-accented eye-candy, or Mohinder-bait, but I see that as more the fault of the writers than the character. And I'm frankly glad she was smart enough to get her power taken away from her, and got out when she could.

Relena (Gundam Wing)

Date: 2009-02-07 02:41 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] anenko.livejournal.com
It's been years since I watched Gundam Wing, and I can't remember anything beyond the broad details of the plot (the very broad details). However, I remember how much I loved Relena. She began the series as a sheltered young woman, and ended up the ruler of a besieged country. She faced hard choices, and stood by her beliefs--as unpopular as they may have been.

There were no easy choices in the Gundam Wing universe, and I don't understand why Relena's pacifism was so much worse than the belief that destroying the world was the only way to achieve peace.

Re: Relena (Gundam Wing)

Date: 2009-02-07 03:58 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thistlerose.livejournal.com
While I wasn't attracted to her character at first, by the end of the series, I'd really come to love Relena. She's incredibly strong, and truly rises above her origins, partly because of her feelings for Heero, partly because she begins to see that she can't just sit back and let things happen to her world.

When she finds out she's the long-last princess of the Sanq (or however you want to spell it) Kingdom, she turns her palace into a school for the DAUGHTERS of world leaders, so they can try to fix what their parents have screwed up. When the Romefeller Foundation (or OZ? I forget) turns her into the Queen of the World so they can use her popularity for their own aims, she turns the tables on them and actually gets the assembled politicians to listen to HER. She TRIES to pursuade her idiot big brother to not blow up the Earth. And she doesn't just fade out after the series; she keeps travelling, giving talks about peace.

Relena is AWESOME.

Enemy no. 1 as far as some parts of fandom are concerned, she gets a lot of flack for every mistake she's ever made, not to mention having the audacity to make Jack and Ianto's relationship more complicated. And considering the total insanity of her fictional universe, she's also incredibly brave and strong, without being impervious to emotional damage. I don't think I will ever get tired of her.

I haven't watched season 5 of SGA, so I can't say anything about her, but I read a lot of people hate the character. Surely, she can't be all bad?

I find her sense of humor on the show really nice. I really enjoyed her character in Trio bantering with Sam and in Brain Storm, lightly teasing Rodney and trying to balance things out when McKay was having a fit and about to go after his professional rival and possibly disclosing some classified material publicly. (this latter was a very controversial ep for her character, but personally, I thought it worked in the context).

The development of her character has a lot of issues, but she isn't deserving the scale of scorn she receives.

Niki Sanders (Heroes)

Date: 2009-02-07 04:38 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] some-stars.livejournal.com
The first time I watched Heroes, I couldn't watch Niki--I literally had to ffwd through some of her scenes. Not because of her but because it just made me TOO ANGRY to watch her getting raped and violated (sexually, physically, emotionally) over and over and over. But when I got through the first season and I watched it again I realized that she was my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE. God knows there are huge, huge flaws in how they wrote her story--and then they destroyed almost everything good they'd done in season two--but the heart of season one for me will always, always be the moment when Niki and Jessica finally integrate--when the protective personality is strong enough to let Niki take control, and Niki is strong enough to TAKE IT and wield her strength on her own terms, for herself. She goes through so much shit, gets manipulated and violated by fucking everybody, does everything she can to protect the people she loves and do what's right, and in the end--I don't care how much the show went on to shit all over it--in the end SHE WINS. She doesn't destroy Jessica, she *integrates* her--learns to use her strength to protect herself without having to go out of her head.

I think it annoys a lot of people how helpless Niki seems at the beginning and for a while, but I love it because it's the story of her journey--how she's been so terrified of herself as a source of power, of her own rage, that she had to cut it off from herself entirely. She starts off depending on other people--mainly men--for everything, being exploited and abused and dismissed by men all around her, and it's her fear of those men that keeps Jessica alive and out of Niki's control. Her story is learning to LET HERSELF BE ANGRY and LET HERSELF BE STRONG so that she can take care of herself and the people she loves. And that is fucking amazing and I will never, ever stop being in love with it.

(And on a moderately tangential note, I also love love love Niki and DL's relationship--it's the only romantic relationship on the show that ever felt to me like they were both truly in love with each other and treated/viewed each other as equals. I love that she's allowed to lean on him and NEED him and it doesn't weaken her at all.)

Oh yes, most of SG1 fandom hated Freya/Anise. The UST for Jack annoyed Sam/Jack shippers and her personality is not shy or even friendly sometimes.

But I thought she was awesome. Speaking her mind and being strong.

She's tough as nails, and totally unapologetic. She knows exactly how much people hate her, and she knows exactly why, and she doesn't see it as a reason to change. She was self-aware enough to recognize that she was unqualified for Nick Fury's job, and to resign in favor of Tony Stark, whom she hated. The fandom thinks she's a psycho fascist bitch. What's not to love? :-P

I think I need a Maria icon, dammit.

(And if anyone actually has any Maria Hill fanworks to link, I'm gonna fall over dead from shock glee.)

I was... startled, actually, by the vehement opposition to Bela I saw and heard across the fandom. I was truly baffled by the reaction.

I mean, here was a woman who was a) smart, b) thriving in a male-dominated world, and c) confident/elegant/in control, and she is reviled by a lot of people who were delighted when she was killed off. She was a scoundrel and a thief and not a very nice person. She would have done absolutely anything to get out of her deal. But hey, I think I would have, too.

She's not my absolute favourite character on the show, but I don't really understand where the outright loathing for her comes from. I imagine that people hate her because she's the plot-antagonist of the Flawed Tragic Self-Loathing Lesbian Who Can Do No Wrong.
