The Unpopular Woman Love Post

It's pretty natural that some female characters do worse in fandom than others, right? And sometimes it's difficult, if not downright impossible, to find a place where you can fan these characters in peace, or fellow fans to fan them with. Not to mention trying to find fanworks about them. Experience says: It hard.

So, stealing the idea shamelessly from doyle_sb4's Women of Doctor Who celebration post, here is a love post for the unpopular female characters. Like in doyle_sb4's post, you start a thread with the character's name and their respective fandom in the subject line, after which people are free to share fic and vid recs, picspams, links to essays, defenses or simply thoughts of love about the character in question. Because unpopularity is a subjective thing most of the time, the character doesn't have to be somebody you know to be the fandom underdog for sure, but if the character also has a large number of fans it would be good to give some reasons about why they're hated and why it's wrong. Links to the character threads will be collected in this post.

Being a post for unpopular characters, this is a bashing free post. If you have any negative opinions about the characters discussed or the fandom rivals of the character of your choice, please keep them to yourself.

Thirteen/Dr. Remy Hadley (House MD)

Remy competed for a position in House's diagnostic team during the season four after his original team took off and eventually got the job, and has been on his team ever since. Mysterious and silent about her personal life, she carried a secret fear about having the gene for Huntington's disease that will eventually kill her, which turned out to be true in the end of the fourth season. In season five she struggled to deal with her disease and followed a self-destructive path for a while before discovering she wanted to live after all, and joined a clinical trial for Huntington's.

According to fandom she's boring, hogs screentime from the other characters, is a rip-off of Cameron (also a hated character) and should just go ahead and die already. Personally I find her cool, restrained personality appealing and I loved how she got openly, if not exactly visibly angry about her unfair fate and yet found the will to try to defeat her illness, and I love that she's hard and doesn't trust easily and isn't easy to deal with. Her storyline isn't without its problems, but killing her off ASAP isn't the answer in my eyes, nor I want her death to happen at all.

I find Thirteen the most interesting of the newbie team because of her mystery to her background and how she dealt with House and her rivals/colleagues.

I never noticed her being a ripoff of Cameron. They relate to House differently.

It's Ridiculously Old Fraud! I would have loved it if he had stuck around to snark with Taub.

I don't understand the Cameron-ripoff complaint either. The only thing they share in common is House's fascination with what makes them tick, but their personalities and attitudes are completely different. If the two of them interacted more, the differences between them would show.

I like all of the new ducklings, but Thirteen more than the boys, because she's interesting and feisty and deeply flawed and yet, in her own way, very strong.

Yes, sure, getting a new team for House meant that there would be less screen time for the old team. But I think the fandom should acknowledge that not all change is bad change. Maybe we get to see less of Cameron and Chase now, but at least the scenes we do get matter.

Yes, exactly! I haven't had any complains about the Chase/Cameron-scenes that we've got, and at this point I think it would be a huge setback for them both to return to House's team. I like the new team just fine, and if there's something I hope for them, it's a little more meat to Kutner's story and a little more happiness to Thirteen's.

She's easily my favorite of the new ducklings. I love how she got a handle on House and now refuses to play his game when she doesn't want to.

I love that about her too. One of my favorite moments from S4 was when House spiked her coffee to get her paranoid about Huntington's and she retaliated by spiking his tea. How is that not awesome? And then how she brushes off his verbal taunts. "Is Bubbles your stripper name?" "Yes." Love her.

I love her, and I don't think she's that much like Cameron (who I also love) at all. I was glad to see her getting more plot and screen time this season.

I do like her responses to House and others.

(And I ship Cameron/Thirteen, though I know it isn't going to happen.)

It would be really interesting to see Cameron and Thirteen interact with each other, which I can't remember happening a lot. Their personalities are certainly different enough so that they wouldn't automatically bond, but I'm sure they would give each other a lot to think about.

Thirteen is probably one of my favourite female characters on tv at the moment for lots of different reasons, but mostly because she's different. She's done stupid things (and learnt from some of them) and she's gotten angry and upset over her eventual fate - she's a human being, and that's how people react. She's challenging and a mystery and she doesn't enable House (which differentiates her from Cameron and Lisa Cuddy).

Oh my God those pictures are absolutely gorgeous! Excuse me while I snag them away.

And yes, the fact Thirteen is different from the earlier women of House is part of why I like her so much. She and Amber both were really re-freshening, and I find it so sad that both of their storylines will end at death.

I have to agree. I like Thirteen. I really didn't like Cameron, I didn't like CTB (until the end) and I think Thirteen fits perfectly well into the team. I like that both her and Taub don't emotionally attach themselves to the team. That she has a life outside of it (except for Foreman). Yeah she gets a lot of screen time but so did Cameron when she was on the team. The old team may still be credited but the 'new' team is the team now and they members of it deserve that recognition.

Thirteen is interesting, and I like her way more than the other two. And people comparing her to Cameron are idiots, because about the only thing they have in common is being women.

Their gender is the only thing in common I see them having, too, and that House has at some point found them both attractive. But their characters and relationships with House are different, so all I can do is shrug in confusion.
