The Unpopular Woman Love Post

It's pretty natural that some female characters do worse in fandom than others, right? And sometimes it's difficult, if not downright impossible, to find a place where you can fan these characters in peace, or fellow fans to fan them with. Not to mention trying to find fanworks about them. Experience says: It hard.

So, stealing the idea shamelessly from doyle_sb4's Women of Doctor Who celebration post, here is a love post for the unpopular female characters. Like in doyle_sb4's post, you start a thread with the character's name and their respective fandom in the subject line, after which people are free to share fic and vid recs, picspams, links to essays, defenses or simply thoughts of love about the character in question. Because unpopularity is a subjective thing most of the time, the character doesn't have to be somebody you know to be the fandom underdog for sure, but if the character also has a large number of fans it would be good to give some reasons about why they're hated and why it's wrong. Links to the character threads will be collected in this post.

Being a post for unpopular characters, this is a bashing free post. If you have any negative opinions about the characters discussed or the fandom rivals of the character of your choice, please keep them to yourself.

Max is smart, brave, loyal, and disinclined to take anyone's shit. She manages to establish a life for herself after horrific trauma, and doesn't allow anyone to dictate to her how she lives it. The show had some serious quality issues, which tend to get blamed on Max and the actress who played her, but I adore her.

I loved Max. How she was strong and independent and managed to be fierce and vulnerable at once, how she loved her family and how madly she'd fight to protect the people she cared about. How she was gorgeous and sassy and funny and comfortable in her own body (in S1 anyway).

And then, of course, there's the contingent of idiot who work themselves into a frothing rage over the fact that she didn't worship Alec because of course, since he's pretty he must be an angel and how dare she touch him.

I just finished watching Dark Angel for the first time this week and I am so in love with Max. I felt like she lost a lot of her spirit in S2 and I'm sad I never got to see her recapture that fire from S1. She was such a force, I love how bright she was.

I was surprised by the vitriol I saw directed towards her when I went looking for the fandom (you'd think I'd learn), so if anyone has any recs (fic, vids, art, meta, picspams, anything!) I would be much obliged. I don't want to have to deal with the haters to get to the good stuff.

Through All These Things Twice (http://lowercasek.mediawood.net/freewheeling.htm) was written for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan ficathon; it's brief, fresh, and unsaccharine, with snappy dialogue and appealingly just-short-of-jaded character voices. The story features Max as narrator, plus Original Cindy and Alec. Tagline: Spring has sprung.

Quality issues? Blame on Max?

Color me confused. I thought Dark Angel was a terrific show and Max was one hell of a character. Original Cindy was my absolute fave, but Max came a very close second. I am very confused that she would end up on a list over unpopular female characters in shows...

Jessica Alba's habit of being in really, really terrible movies probably was a factor in this, as many people have decided she can't act. I fucking love Max and Cindy, myself.

Oh, Max. She's like an adorably awkward puppy you can't help but want to cuddle, even when she tries to bite your hand off. She was smart and brave and loyal and she got the short end of the stick writing-wise on a show where the writing was generally awful and the PTB sucked all the fun out of her in season 2, but when they let her be with Cindy or Joshua or Alec, she shone through.

I LOVE MAX. oh my god, how I love her. I kind of almost love her more in season 2 when we get to see more of her flaws, because they're such natural intuitive extensions of her good points and what she's been through. I love how she relates differently to every character but always stays the same at her core, I love her fierceness and incredible emotional damage, I love watching Jessica Alba slowly but surely learn to act, I just. MAX. Max is the HEART of the SHOW and she is more than up to it.

Maybe it's good I watched the show all by myself, because wtf? It's so much about Max, I don't understand how anyone could like it if they don't like her. (Well, okay, there are probably people who say the same about other main characters I dislike in other shows, but still.)

Max was so cynical yet caring, so messed-up yet brave and determined, so smart and brassy, so much awesome.

In conclusion: Like the t-shirt says, girls kick ass.
