The Unpopular Woman Love Post

It's pretty natural that some female characters do worse in fandom than others, right? And sometimes it's difficult, if not downright impossible, to find a place where you can fan these characters in peace, or fellow fans to fan them with. Not to mention trying to find fanworks about them. Experience says: It hard.

So, stealing the idea shamelessly from doyle_sb4's Women of Doctor Who celebration post, here is a love post for the unpopular female characters. Like in doyle_sb4's post, you start a thread with the character's name and their respective fandom in the subject line, after which people are free to share fic and vid recs, picspams, links to essays, defenses or simply thoughts of love about the character in question. Because unpopularity is a subjective thing most of the time, the character doesn't have to be somebody you know to be the fandom underdog for sure, but if the character also has a large number of fans it would be good to give some reasons about why they're hated and why it's wrong. Links to the character threads will be collected in this post.

Being a post for unpopular characters, this is a bashing free post. If you have any negative opinions about the characters discussed or the fandom rivals of the character of your choice, please keep them to yourself.

I had seen maybe one X-File in my entire life up until last spring, when I watched seven seasons in what feels like about two days but was probably a bit more than that. I had been told that I was going to hate Agent Fowley, and for about five minutes I actually kind of did -- and then I smacked myself in the back of the head for falling for the old "set her up against the female lead over the guy" trick, and realized that she was awesome.

Er.

Which is to say: she really kind of was: pragmatic and weird and mature and single-minded and unexpectedly morally grey, not to mention the killer chemistry with... practically everyone. And if the writers had had any sense in their heads at that point, they would have written her into the next season as an informant/quadruple agent/whatever; at the very least, she deserved better than being killed off offscreen, which is what I think really started to put a damper on my enthusiasm for the rest of the series.

selenak wrote a good essay on the "Insignificant Other" (http://selenak.livejournal.com/270914.html?mode=reply&format=light) that goes into various examples of how that trope operates in TV and film. As you say, Diana Fowley really didn't get a fair shot with either the writers or the fans.

Word to that. I would have loved to have seen Agent Fowley as a quadruple agent or informant. My own interest in the series dropped off after the fifth season, then picked up again in the ninth because of the Scully, Reyes, and Doggett team-up (despite that season's many and various flaws).
