The Unpopular Woman Love Post

It's pretty natural that some female characters do worse in fandom than others, right? And sometimes it's difficult, if not downright impossible, to find a place where you can fan these characters in peace, or fellow fans to fan them with. Not to mention trying to find fanworks about them. Experience says: It hard.

So, stealing the idea shamelessly from [livejournal.com profile] doyle_sb4's Women of Doctor Who celebration post, here is a love post for the unpopular female characters. Like in [livejournal.com profile] doyle_sb4's post, you start a thread with the character's name and their respective fandom in the subject line, after which people are free to share fic and vid recs, picspams, links to essays, defenses or simply thoughts of love about the character in question. Because unpopularity is a subjective thing most of the time, the character doesn't have to be somebody you know to be the fandom underdog for sure, but if the character also has a large number of fans it would be good to give some reasons about why they're hated and why it's wrong. Links to the character threads will be collected in this post.

Being a post for unpopular characters, this is a bashing free post. If you have any negative opinions about the characters discussed or the fandom rivals of the character of your choice, please keep them to yourself.

And now, knock yourselves out!

ETA: The character and the fandom should both be named in the subject line, I forgot to mention the fandom initially. Sorry about the inconvenience!

ETA 2: If you want to share you thoughts about a character who has a thread, please reply to the thread in question. General comments and threads for new characters go to the main post.

Teyla Emmagan, Stargate Atlantis

From: [identity profile] khourijackson.livejournal.com
I don't know why a lot of people dislike Teyla. In fact it's this hate that bring me in fandom, as if I could change the world and say how amazing Teyla is.

She's my favorite and the reason why I watched the show. It's really her who attracted me to the spin off first. I liked the idea of Atlantis because it was another galaxy and a way for me to be totally in the imagination, without Earth reality.
The show didn't pursue this road but Teyla was all of this. She was the exotism, the new and I liked that she was different.

But what I loved is that quickly we learned that she was pretty, but it doesn't count all the contrary of what a lot of people said, she was strong, not a stereotype at all. She was a leader yet she was calm and stable. We learned how quickly she quicked ass yet she never overused it, she was always the voice of the reason but not only she saves the day a lot of time, even if people didn't want to see it.

She is so concerned about people around her, nice but not naive nor stupid. She learned more than a lot of characters in the show and change a lot. A lot happened to her and she was formed by all of this.

Finally, I always loved her psychic link with the ennemy. She is double and had to live with, to control it and even dominate it, once again it shows how strong she is. Without speaking of this gift which give us awesome acting from the actress and the mystical aspect it gives her. Always so mysterious it stayed so much to see :D

MGS - Naomi Hunter

From: [identity profile] fireholly.livejournal.com
I used to hate her in MGS4 until I realised everything about her I didn't like was Otacon's fault. All she did was do what she needed to do and be awesome about it. She's devoted to her goals, complex and the only person in the whole cast who ends up succeeding at her plan, outwitting goddamn Ocelot to do it. And her voice acting is probably the best out of everyone.

Plus, I wouldn't mess with someone able to genetically engineer death viruses, and neither would you.

I could go on about this one but I think this right here has stated my exact feelings on the matter:

Silk Spectre II/Laurie Juspeczyk, Watchmen

She gets bashed, mostly on the /co/ board of 4chan (yeah, I know, I shouldn't be expecting a bastion of intelligence from that site to begin with, but /co/ tends to be one of more intelligent boards), for...just about everything. Having a sex life, being "useless," being bitchy, being a plot device...a lot of these criticisms of which can be targeted at many of the other characters as well.

And if she's an obligatory female character, she's the most interesting obligatory female character I've seen. She's full of her own personal flaws and struggles with a twisted family back story to boot, but she's also shown to be competent at what she does, despite her resentment for it and years of retirement. If there's one thing I'm worried more about than the ending for the film adaptation, it's whether these flaws of hers (as well as those of the rest of the cast) will be sacrificed in order to make her out to be a more "kickass" character, which I think would be a crime greater than the exclusion of the original ending.

Jun the Swan, Science Ninja Team Gatchaman

Date: 2009-02-15 01:12 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sarajayechan.livejournal.com
I've only seen her bashed by one particular fan, but even people who like her are quick to complain that she's "too stereotypically feminine" for being afraid of bugs, squeeing over how pretty something is, saying "oh what do we do now" to her commander in times of crisis. Jun is not only a hell of a fighter and an explosives expert, but she runs her own snack bar (at age 16 even!) AND takes care of Jinpei, and is shown to be pretty damn competent at these things. For an anime made in the pre-girl power 70s in the even more pre-girl power Japan, that's fucking awesome. (Besides, if she didn't have flaws and weaknesses she'd be kinda boring.)

So agree. Jun was my favorite character on the series when I first saw it in the '70's (under Battle of the Planets) because she was out there kicking A** with the boys. She stood up to Joe's rages, she knocked sense into Ken, she fought down and dirty when she had to - the Swan is cool and deserves that kind of recognition.

I also have to add my Ginny love. I love her character though think I ended up liking Ginny more than anything because all the defending I did for the character. *lol*

I have to say I pretty much agree with all you guys. Though the one thing that really bugs me about the Ginny haters is that they go as far as blaming Ginny for what happened with the Chamber of Secrets. That's just like blaming a victim of rape. She didn't know better and was navie about the diary. Harry didn't blame her, Dumbledore didn't blame her for what happened. Urgh....

From what I see from the fandom of HP that Ginny is in the middle. There are those who really love her, and then there's those who hate in such a passion they make-up or exacterate what things she done and try to twist them into something "evil" or "cruel."
Then there are those who really don't care about her character one way or another.

Anyway, I can't wait to see her character in the film HBP extend and have Ginny done justice.

Hinata Hyuuga, Naruto

From: [identity profile] miss-celestine.livejournal.com
I couldn't let this wonderful post pass by without mentioning that poor, adorable Hinata, aka the Ginny Weasley of the Naruto fandom - I'm not even active in it and I can still feel the waves of hatred directed against her. Why? Because she's shy, kind and peaceful (meaning she doesn't ZOMG KICK ASS LIEK TEMARI/SAKURA/TENTEN/INO/YOUR MOM), and so overwhelmed with her feelings for Naruto that she actually faints when she sees him.

Clearly, her haters don't understand the benefits of comic relief (why doesn't Iruka get shit for his nose bleeds every time he sees the Sexy Jutsu??). And they also fail to see that Hinata was the first goddamn motherfucking character in the series to see Naruto's worth and care for him when everyone in Konoha hated his ass. Yes, including Sakura and Sasuke.

Alas, much like Ginny, she comes off as a weak, silly fangirl, as if her feelings were shallow and didn't count. But it's clear to me that she has tremendous potential that's just waiting to be revealed. And she's so different from all the rest of the girls in that series, who are all pretty competitive and outspoken. Hinata shows that you can be quiet and gentle and still take names with your ninja powers.

I definitely agree with you there.

I mean, for crying out loud, she's part of the MAIN BRANCH OF THE HYUUGA CLAN. It may not be as powerful as, say, an Uchiha, but it's pretty damn close. She has a lot of potential as a kunoichi.

My God, I don't really like Naruto, but I adore Hinata so much. And those who bash her for being kind and then claim they're feminists... clearly don't know wtf feminism truly is. >>!

Hinata is the only girl my slash loving guyfriend likes as a potential love interest with Naruto. He adores her character.

She reminds me a lot of myself growing up. It took me a long time to grow out of my shyness.

Momo Hinamori, Bleach

From: [identity profile] akai_senshi.livejournal.com
She gets so much hate for standing by Aizen. But you have to remember, Aizen was CONTROLLING HER and it's not really her fault.

Plus you just want to give the girl a hug for all the crap she's been put through.

Miyako Inoue, Digimon 02

Date: 2009-02-15 09:41 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dropsofgleam.livejournal.com
Gee, the way some people *still* hate poor Miyako after 02 was finished... It's not a sin to be the mother of Ken's children and take care of them! (Not to mention, one of them's a *baby*, huh. Of course he'll need his mom's care more than others). Neither it's a sin to be impulsive, all-heart, cheerful and sometimes a bit ditzy. Because when it DID count, she was there for all of her friends, helping them out as much as she could.

Screw you, bashers who still use the Grand Finale to bash this poor kid. Miyako Inoue is my favorite of the Digimon girls after Mimi and I'm damn proud of it. It's okay to be disappointed at your ship (whatever it was) being sunk, but it's not like Miyako was to blaaaaaame for it. (And STFU about how ZOMFG anti-feminist her part of the ending was. Housewife and mother =/= love slave, moron or bitch, thank you very much).

Re: Miyako Inoue, Digimon 02

From: [identity profile] justaminuet.livejournal.com
Miyako was awesome, no matter what age she was at. This concept of "OMG, she's a housewife, how dare she give up her dreams?!?!?!" thing is beyond me. When did she ever really state her dreams on the show? Oh, that's right. NEVER. Miyako never revealed during the series what goals she had. Just because you're good at something (like she was at computers), doesn't mean you want that to be your future. I've always loved drawing, but I hated having graphic design as my major.

Even so, being a housewife is such an all encompassing, usually thankless job, and anyone willing to do it does it out of sheer love. Which, for Miyako, makes total sense. Especially considering the rather large family she comes from.

She didn't sacrifice anything, and fandom just can't seem to grasp that, because most fandom is too ignorant to realize what feminism is really supposed to be about. As in, learn some history, people.

Also, anyone willing to slap the taste out of Ken's mouth when he REALLY deserved it, while everyone else was still using kids' gloves and pussy-footing around him, deserves some serious love.

Misa Amane (Death Note)

Date: 2009-02-17 12:23 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] justaminuet.livejournal.com
Yes, she's flawed. Yes, she's so blinded by love and devotion that she's willing to be used.

So, yes. She's human. And I guess that's why fandom can't accept her, because maybe she hits too close to home sometimes, but that's why I love her.

Fandom likes to ignore her backstory, but it's the most important thing about her, because it's the driving force behind Misa. This girl loved her parents more than anything, and loosing them broke her. How could you blame her for hero worshiping the man who punished their murderer? Or even falling in love with him? Sure, it's fairytale-like and naive, but for all of Misa's dark side, she still has the innocent child part of her that still wants to believe in knights in shining armor and happy endings.

She's not stupid either. Just remember which kira discovered the other first. If she had wanted to, she could've easily killed Light and taken over herself without him having the slightest chance of retaliation.

Even L liked her; copped a feel, yes, but also complimented her at times, and seemed disappointed when he had to let her go at the end of the Yotsuba arc.

Why fans can't understand the tragedy of her character is beyond me. Oh, wait. It's because of the boobs. Nevermind.

Juri Katou (Digimon Tamers)

This poor girl gets so much crap because she, a ten year old girl, suffered a mental breakdown after Leomon died. Obviously, having your partner die isn't something worth angsting about - it's not like any other people have ever went to pieces when their partners died! *cough*Takeru*cough*Ken*cough*Masaru*cough*

Even though she Takato's love interest, I thought she was a pretty well developed character.

Asuka Tenjoin (Yu-Gi-Oh GX)

From: [identity profile] acmeeoy.livejournal.com
Just watch, I'll be the only one who ever watched GX and actually liked it...

Granted, she is not as disliked as Anzu is, but I've heard and seen people blame her for having guys fall in love with her - of course, it's her fault she hit the gene lottery and grew up to be quite a looker - and potentionally getting in the way of other pairings - even though she only had the briefest of crushes on Juudai and decided to not pursue it. In fact, she had stated that she wasn't generally interested in romance and married to her duel disk. Of course, she's female! What female doesn't want a wedding ring on her finger? There couldn't be possibly any exceptions to that statement!

Even though her development could have been handled better, I like her. Reserved and dignified, she's a good friend and the focal point of common sense in the insanity that is Duel Academia.

Do you know what one of my favourite scenes from her is?

Where Harry is afraid he's possesed (Book 6) by Voldemort through his dreams, and he's angsting and being paranoid. So Ginny goes to talk to him about it, and Harry forgot that she was once possesed by Voldemort, and knows exactly how it would feel.

Oh my God. My love for that scene, I can't even. No words. I forgave JKR a lot of things about the books just for including that one scene. <3
