As I was watching "Kamikaze Girls" for the first time, I thought to myself-- I've seen this movie before! Not this movie exactly, but something a lot *like* it. But I couldn't figure out what that movie could be, because *nothing* is like Kamikaze Girls.

Then I figured it out... Pictures & mostly non-spoilery summary behind the cut  )

New fic:

I was already working on this before, but it was [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon that prompted me to finish it. It's a Friday Night Lights story, about Tyra Collette during and just after her first semester at college. It's called "Chains and Fetters," and the details and the link are over in my journal.

Old fic:

1. Another FNL story about Tami and Julie Taylor, set at the hometown homecoming game in 2013, "Sun of a New Season."

2. A West Wing story that follows CJ through the years and through some of the significant moments in her relationship with Toby, "Flight Path." It's a CJ/Toby story, but it's very much about CJ.

3. A story called "All the Running You Can Do," written about Audrey Flankman in the short-lived CBC political drama "Snakes and Ladders." Nobody saw this show, which is a damn shame, because I'm still convinced that Audrey Flankman is the best female character ever to grace the small screen. The story is set a few years before the show, when Audrey (now a cabinet minister in the Canadian federal government) was first running for office. If that's your sort of thing, go ahead and read the story even if you don't know the show; it's pre-show, after all, and pretty removed from the action of the source text anyway. (And if you fall in love with Audrey too, I might be able to get you copies of the six episodes that were made. *g*)

Title: Happy When It Rains
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Pairing: John/Nancy
Rating: PG
Word count: 1406
Summary: John left this morning, Nancy knows, because his bags aren't in the closet where they usually are when he's home.
Notes: Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] queenzulu for the encouragement and the audiencing. I would say that there aren't any Outcast spoilers beyond the fact that Nancy exists.

I made several Keller icons from 4x16, "Trio," because she looked so darn pretty, and then I went through my "to be posted" folder and added a bunch more icons from various sources for [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon -- so yay, women!

[10-14] Kristen Bell
[15-20] Friday Night Lights
[21-23] 30 Rock
[24] The West Wing

As usual, comment, credit, no hotlinking, textless icons are not bases. :)

Given fandom's conflicted attitude towards self-promotion, I imagine many of us are a little too self-conscious to post links to our own women-centric work here. This is the post for you to do so without shame. It's getting near the end of the party, and it would be a pity if other people didn't get to read your stories/watch your vids/contemplate your thinkiness about women characters because of a few piddling social norms, wouldn't it? Just post a link or three in the comments, maybe tell us a little about what you did and why. No one will judge you.

I'll start. )

Whew. That wasn't so hard. Who wants to go next?

I have a tendency (in het as well as slash, natch) to write in the male POV, but I do have several female POV and female-centric stories to share.

Fandoms include: Prison Break, Doctor Who, FNL, The Office, TBD, BSG, Veronica Mars, Heroes, Ugly Betty and more )

[profile] hossgal gave me the idea by posting a list of her recs for SFF books that are largely female-centric or feature strong female characters.  Being a comic book person myself (in addition to books!), I thought I'd go with imitation being the most sincere form of flattery and do a post listing the comic titles I read at least partially because of their female characters.

Due to my own inclinations, much of this will be in the superhero genre, but not quite all.  Please feel free to add more to the list in the comments, either here or at my own journal!

Trouncing alien invaders, venturing Underhill and just plain being cool

Written especially for [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon, albeit posted in my own LJ, an essay comparing the treatment of Samantha Mulder in The X-Files and Mary Winchester in Supernatural. With extra use of terms like "objectification" and "agency."

Is Samantha Mulder just a symbol?

An essay I did earlier today about the women of Supernatural and Friday Night Lights and the difference between a show liking women and respecting them.

FNL, SPN and those women.
