I've torn through my rec lists, bookmarks and memories to compile a short list of 35 stories featuring the amazing female characters from 'Battlestar Galactica'.

I think I managed to get at least one story featuring each character (expect Ellen Tigh) on the list, there are original characters, ensemble pieces, character studies, action stories.... This list is mostly Gen or gen'ish stories featuring the multitude of canon relationships as part of the stories (some might call them Bob) with some Het thrown in as well. BSG fandom has an amazingly well-tagged fem-slash community: [livejournal.com profile] bsg_femslash masterlist (del.icio.us and a community dedicated to the female characters: [livejournal.com profile] bsg_women. Both are great places to find more fanworks of different types.

Featured here are Six, Gina, Boomer, Athena, Dee, Kara, Laura, Racetrack, Kat, Seelix, Jean, Tory, Elosha, Cally, Cain and several original characters.

Warning: Spoilers for everything aired to date! )

There are over two dozen wonderful stories about women posted at [livejournal.com profile] spn_xx, and plenty of room for more. The comm was started as a place for any and all fic featuring canon female characters from Supernatural, including crossovers in both directions -- SPN women visiting elsewhere, and female characters from other sources straying into the SPN 'verse. There's a huge list of prompts here. The master list for the original challenge is here, with additional stories appearing subsequently. Enjoy them, and add your own if so inclined!

Title: More Than Just a Pretty Face
Fandom: Supernatural
Disclaimer: I own absolutely nothing. It’s all Eric Kripke’s and the CW’s and blah blah blah. We all know who the real braintrust is around here.
Rating: PG-13
Characters: Jo Harvelle, Kat
Spoilers: Anything is fair game up through episode 2x14 (Born Under a Bad Sign).
Summary: Bird’s gotta fly, girl’s gotta hunt.
Author's Note: This story never would've been finished without the weekend of uber productivity at la casa [livejournal.com profile] hiyacynth. She is totally the rockingest. Also in the rocking category is [livejournal.com profile] quellefromage who performed the beta and pretty much makes my writing better simply by existing.

( Getting into the dorm was the easiest part of the hunt. )

Who are your favourite "guilty pleasure" female characters? The ones who aren't good examples of what can be done with female characters, but who you deeply love anyway?

Have you spent hours creating backstory for a female character whose sole purpose in canon is to provide eyecandy for fanboys? Do you feel wildly passionate about a woman from a badly written, sexist series? Is your OTC a woman who died in the first episode of a new series, before the opening credits even began to roll?

I've been sitting on this for a while, and then this comm motivated me to finish it up so I could post it in time. I really, really loved Audrey in Heroes' first season--she kind of disappeared off the show for logistical reasons, but she was one of my favorite recurring characters, and Clea Duvall has always been one of my favorite actresses.

This is going to be moderately spoilerly for all of S1 & S2.

If you've paid any attention to Fandom over the last couple of years, you may have come across the idea that SPN is a misogynistic show where the only purpose of the women characters is fanboy eyecandy.

I don't share this pov. I wouldn't watch the show if I thought all it did with female characters was degrade them.

If you're sold on the negative pov of the show (or sitting firmly in the "I like/love the show despite its ugly treatment of women" camp) then I don't think I'm going to convince you - and that's fine. (People still haven't brought me around to seeing Buffy the Vampire Slayer as all that inspiring, either. Different strokes, you know?)

But if you're still on the edge...let me share with you Seven Ways I Think SPN and Its Women Rock. )

SPN has hot boys who love women, and tough, complex gals who take up a lot of space in this universe. Don't let the bad press stop you from giving it a try.
