My latest fannish love is Sherlock, but I will be the first to admit--and lament--that the show is one big boys' club. With that in mind, I recommend two fics that address the particularly execrable depiction of Molly Hooper, the meek pathologist treated with disdain by Sherlock and the show alike.

[livejournal.com profile] rosa_acicularis, The Anatomist: This is a completely brilliant and gleefully savage rewriting of Molly within the canon as we have seen it. It turns everything on its head, so that her scenes, which were excruciating to watch, suddenly become almost satisfying. Rarely have I seen a female character so thoroughly reclaimed by fandom. And it's an absorbing and chilling story in its own right. (This is, technically, a WIP, but even if the last part is never posted, what already exists stands well on its own.)

[livejournal.com profile] introductory, that thing you love: And...coming from the other direction entirely, this hilarious little fic has Molly finding love in the arms of the Old Spice Guy. No, I swear, it's actually funny, and not just the mechanical "wackiness" that one so often finds under the label "crack."

"Anything is possible when your man is me and not a sociopathic, homosexual private detective," said Isaiah, grinning widely.

I'd love to see recs for other stories that recoup the ladies of Sherlock. It's a seriously uphill battle!

Yes, however much I adore Sherlock and its fandom, the lack of women is really frustrating. These recs are great, especially The Anatomist, one of my favorite stories in the fandom.

Since you recced some wonderful Molly stories, here's a few Sherlock fics focusing on Sally Donovan:

-The Deepest Secret Nobody Knows (http://community.livejournal.com/lovingthevolume/15691.html) by [livejournal.com profile] flecalicious. A one-night stand over four years before ASIP left Sally pregnant with Sherlock's baby. She chooses to have the baby and raise the child alone. It's an unlikely premise, but this fic is magnificent and makes a surprising amount of sense with canon. Sally's characterization is wonderfully nuanced. The last two scenes in particular blew me away.

-Sally Donovan Investigates (http://spycandy.livejournal.com/1467.html) by [livejournal.com profile] spycandy. Sally begins to pick up on Sherlock's observational and deductive abilities. I love the way she becomes a truly impressive detective while remaining herself.

Oh! There's a great little series of stories about Molly and Lestrade...but I can't remember the author....

Found them!

I'm so with you on this battle, and haven't seen any stories at all about women in Sherlock – so thanks for getting me started!

Thanks for these recs! I haven't read much in Sherlock fandom, but I really enjoyed Other Things to Do After Buying a Cat (http://archiveofourown.org/works/107889) by BlackEyedGirl (Sally/Molly).

Just got into Sherlock too, so happy to see recs for its few female characters here. Thanks!

I've done several Harry/Molly fics: Birthday surprise (http://marysutherland.livejournal.com/9021.html), and a follow-up Launch off (http://marysutherland.livejournal.com/11041.html). There will be more Harry/Molly to come at some point, and there's also some other slashing of female characters from Sherlock I'm doing.

I'd also strongly recommend Mrs Hudson's Uneventful Week (http://aslipperysloth.livejournal.com/3116.html) which has brilliant Mrs Hudson/Sherlock.

Thank you for the recommendations! I saw and liked Sherlock, but did regret the show's lack of fully fleshed-out female characters (and fandom doesn't seem to focus all that much on them, either). The Anatomist in particular is absolutely brilliant.
