The Unpopular Woman Love Post

It's pretty natural that some female characters do worse in fandom than others, right? And sometimes it's difficult, if not downright impossible, to find a place where you can fan these characters in peace, or fellow fans to fan them with. Not to mention trying to find fanworks about them. Experience says: It hard.

So, stealing the idea shamelessly from [livejournal.com profile] doyle_sb4's Women of Doctor Who celebration post, here is a love post for the unpopular female characters. Like in [livejournal.com profile] doyle_sb4's post, you start a thread with the character's name and their respective fandom in the subject line, after which people are free to share fic and vid recs, picspams, links to essays, defenses or simply thoughts of love about the character in question. Because unpopularity is a subjective thing most of the time, the character doesn't have to be somebody you know to be the fandom underdog for sure, but if the character also has a large number of fans it would be good to give some reasons about why they're hated and why it's wrong. Links to the character threads will be collected in this post.

Being a post for unpopular characters, this is a bashing free post. If you have any negative opinions about the characters discussed or the fandom rivals of the character of your choice, please keep them to yourself.

And now, knock yourselves out!

ETA: The character and the fandom should both be named in the subject line, I forgot to mention the fandom initially. Sorry about the inconvenience!

ETA 2: If you want to share you thoughts about a character who has a thread, please reply to the thread in question. General comments and threads for new characters go to the main post.

Jo Harvelle, Supernatural

Oh my god, Jo. Jo whom I loved, loved loved and got kicked off the show because...fans didn't like her, pretty much. I have written SO MUCH about my love for her and I just don't even know where to start. In my mental SPN universe she has a much, much larger place than in the real one. I love her so much and she had SO MUCH POTENTIAL and Alona Tal was fucking BRILLIANT.

I know. Jo was a time when they really, really shouldn't have listened to the fandom.

I hate to admit it, but in retrospect, what they did to Jo was the reason I stopped watching the show. The potential in her was just so huge, I completely agree - and Alona Tal was just amazing to watch.

Since the beginning of the series, I'd wanted to see a strong female character with ties to the boys come in and kick some ass. It fit, it wasn't overwhelming, and it gave good character development.

I miss you, Ms. Harvelle.

Yeah. It didn't really kick in for me until later, but Jo is why I don't like the show any more.

God, I loved Jo. She was a brilliant character, who was used and then discarded summarily. I miss her and all of her potential for young, righteous ass-kicking.

Jooooo! I miss the kickass Jo that took a shotgun from Dean, and then came up with her own hunt and was just amazing! *sighs*

In my personal cannon, she's taking names and kicking ass.

She really did. To be honest I was resistant to the idea of her when the buzz started about who her character was going to be. But all that did was teach me not to make up my mind too fast about sides/advance word/rumors. She changed a lot between the early notes the show had on her and what went on screen and I'm sure Alona Tal had a lot to do with making her so vivid. As soon as I'd seen her in action a bit, I liked her a lot and was really intrigued with her story, seeing her tested and how smart and determined she was.

The funny thing about Jo is that, when it comes to *searching out* killer ghosts and such, canon seems to indicate she's actually a better hunter than Sam and Dean. How many different episodes began with them getting a hunt handed to them, by their Dad, or Bobby, or Ash, etc.? Whereas Jo actually did the research and managed to hunt down patterns of deaths all by herself. Good on her. And BOO on the writers for knuckling under to fan reaction.

I wasn't heavily in SPN fandom to begin with, but what fandom did to her and the show listening to them about it soured me on the idea of getting any further involved so much that I never managed to get into it again.

She was already amazing. I'm so disappointed she never got to be moreso.
