mxcatmoon: Equalizer 2 (Equalizer 2)
[personal profile] mxcatmoon
Title: Motivation
Fandom: The Equalizer (TV 2021)
Author: Cat Moon
Characters: Robyn McCall, Delilah, Mel
Rating: G
Summary: Robyn is proud of Delilah, but she's still a Mom
Words: 310
Written For: Half A Moon Day 3: Blood, Sweat, and Tears, Vocab Drabbles 70 Charmolypi

Notes
: I'm so excited by this perfect opportunity to rave about this show. It stars Queen Latifah as a female version of the Equalizer, Robyn McCall. She's single mother to a teenage daughter. If you want a show with strong, independent women who empower each other – this is that show! It highlights family bonds, and friendship that's like family. You have kick-a** women, and ordinary (non-combat trained) women who are strong in other, just as important ways. It also deals with current social topics in a way that's real. This series is starting its 4th season on CBS this month, and it's criminally underrated IMHO.

The link goes to the fic on my journal, where you can find the ficlet as well as a video after the story, Queen Latifah singing "I Know Where I've Been" from the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize Concert.

Tell us all about your favorite female author or tell us about a book you read with a strong female character and why you'd recommend it. (Yes, my dears, just when you thought you left the book reports behind, along comes HalfAMoon, sorry, not sorry).

If you choose not to go the book report route, you can draw, write, or rec something that shows a particular character's relationship to books, or talk about the difference between the book version of a character and the version of a character in another medium (film, musical, video game, etc.).

Just go wherever the Muse takes you. If this prompt doesn't speak to you, feel free to share something that does. You can post in a separate entry or as a comment to this post.

I thought I'd stop by with a rec list of some of my favorite Horror books written by female authors and featuring amazing female characters :D

Delicious Monsters by Liselle Sambury - "The Haunting of Hill House meets Sadie in this evocative and mind-bending psychological thriller following two teen girls navigating the treacherous past of a mysterious mansion ten years apart."

Thoughts )

Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant - "Seven years ago, the Atargatis set off on a voyage to the Mariana Trench to film a “mockumentary” bringing to life ancient sea creatures of legend. It was lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a maritime tragedy."

Thoughts )

Catherine House by Elisabeth Thomas - "A story about a dangerously curious young undergraduate whose rebelliousness leads her to discover a shocking secret involving an exclusive circle of students . . . and the dark truth beneath her school’s promise of prestige."

Thoughts )

A Dowry of Blood by S.T. Gibson - "Saved from the brink of death by a mysterious stranger, Constanta is transformed from a medieval peasant into a bride fit for an undying king. But when Dracula draws a cunning aristocrat and a starving artist into his web of passion and deceit, Constanta realizes that her beloved is capable of terrible things."

Thoughts )

The Weight of Blood by Tiffany D. Jackson - "Tiffany D. Jackson ramps up the horror and tackles America's history and legacy of racism in this suspenseful YA novel following a biracial teenager as her Georgia high school hosts its first integrated prom." aka a Carrie retelling!

Thoughts )

Happy reading!

One of the reasons I love Warrior Nun so much is that when the female characters are going through it (and they do) it shows. They're bloody, sweaty, teary, all of it. And it's glorious. The reason I am late with this is because since I do like this so much, I already made most of my favorite scenes in which bloody, teary, sweaty female characters are featured heavily and wasn't sure whether I wanted to rec instead of making something. In the end, I did neither yesterday because I posted the first chapter of my epic fic and couldn't concentrate on anything else afterwards, lol. But today I decided to do both, make a new wallpaper of a scene I love that I hadn't made much of before (because frankly, there aren't great screenshots of it, but I made it work) and I am also reccing the things I made before because I love them.

So, here is one new wallpaper and also 7 icons, 5 wallpapers and 3 picspams.

Content warning for blood, gore and violence.

Fanwork type: Review
Genre: Fantasy
Books in the series: The Jasmine Throne, The Oleander Sword, The Lotus Empire (to be released)

The Burning Kingdoms is a fantasy trilogy by Tasha Suri which splits its perspective between three main protagonists: Priya, Malini, and Bhumika. Only two of the novels have been published presently (the third has a tentative release for November 2024), but throughout the story Suri does a fantastic job of allowing women to be the drivers of the plot. While the three protagonists have varying degrees of social/political power in their society, they all are the ones making the important decisions in terms of the storyline.

Suri also excels in making each of her characters distinct. Each of the women in the book is a well-rounded, fully developed character with her own motivations, fears, and desires. Each has a different perspective on the events of the book and prioritizes accordingly. Neither does any of them ever fall prey to being sidelined or stereotyped. While Bhumika is a mother, she is also allowed to be much more than that, and is never reduced to the status of her motherhood. While Priya and Malini engage in romance, it never subordinates their overarching goals, which fits perfectly with the sort of people they are.

I'm greatly looking forward to the release of the third book, and happy to get more people on board in the meantime!

For a longer review of the first two books, see my earlier thoughts here.

Same as with Blood, Sweat and Tears, books are also found very prominently in Warrior Nun, often used for exposition or to move the plot along (or hinder it, grumbling in 'how hard is it to name names in your secret diary?') and I have also made many graphics with them before. But since there's a precedence now of me both making new things and reccing my own things, I decided to do the same again. So I made two new wallpapers and am also posting 6 bookmarks, 7 tumblr graphics and 1 wallpaper I've made before.

Title: A Little Quality Time

Fandom: Star Trek Reboot
Fanwork type: Fic
Pairings/Characters: Gaila/Nyota Uhura
Rating: Mature
Words: 2,753
Summary: Gaila, for her part, possesses enough enthusiasm for two. Priority One becomes winning over her overachieving roommate, because who in their right mind wants to go through something like this on their own?

Reccer's Notes: This is one of those rare pairs that I never would have thought of before reading the fic, but now I totally headcanon it. At the Academy, Uhura has her nose stuck in the "books" all the time. Luckily, she has a roommate who will make sure she also remembers to have fun. Friends-to-lovers. Uhura's pov.

Title:look all around, there's nothing but blue skies
Author: ChronicBookworm
Fandom: Hunger Games
Fanwork type: Fic
Pairings/Characters: Katniss Everdeen/Finnick Odair
Rating: General Audiences
Words: 11,312
Summary: Katniss moves to District 12 after Peeta's death, where Finnick is mourning Annie.

Reccer's Notes: This fic does a great job of depicting PTSD and grief that just won't leave, which is exactly what Collins did such a good job showing with the book version of Katniss. In this fic's a/u, things are even worse for Katniss (and Finnick), but the author allows them to reach a hopeful conclusion without ever downplaying the trauma and hurt that Katniss is feeling. It's a very organic look at all-consuming, agonizing grief.

The Heroic Trio is a 1993 Hong Kong action film starring three movie stars: Michelle Yeoh, Maggie Cheung and Anita Mui. It's a wild mix of superhero film, wuxia and Hong Kong cop drama centering on three heroines.

If you like identity porn, messy relationships among women with shared traumatic past, stylistic action scenes, and flawed action heroines who kick ass, I recommend it.

Reccing P. Djèlí Clark's 12k word-long short story, A Dead Djinn in Cairo, which you can read for free on Tor/Reactormag here!

Synopsis: Egypt, 1912. In an alternate Cairo infused with the otherworldly, the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities investigate disturbances between the mortal and the (possibly) divine. What starts off as an odd suicide case for Special Investigator Fatma el-Sha’arawi leads her through the city’s underbelly as she encounters rampaging ghouls, saucy assassins, clockwork angels, and a plot that could unravel time itself.

In hindsight, I think [personal profile] octahedrite first recommended this on her journal a few years ago. But the lead character, Fatma el-Sha’arawi, made such an impression on me that she's fresh in my memory. She's a little vain, extremely capable, and exudes so much action. She reminds me of Ann Lister from Gentleman Jack. The supporting cast were written well, too, including Siti (hot af, you can find out about her from the story; I won't spoil!) I was genuinely surprised by the strength of the female characters and the implied queerness at the end.

Come be feral at this description of Fatma with me:

Today she’d chosen a light gray suit, complete with a matching vest, chartreuse tie, and a red-on-white pinstriped shirt. She had picked it up in the English District, and had it specially tailored to fit her small frame. The accompanying walking cane—a sturdy length of black steel capped by a silver pommel, a lion’s head—was admittedly a bit much. But it added a flair of extravagance to the ensemble. And her father always said if people were going to stare, you should give them a show.
