Author's Notes: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] aishuu and [livejournal.com profile] incandescens for their feedback on this and for pushing me past the original ending to this piece. This was written specifically for [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon, as part of my attempt to write some one-shots focused on the ladies of Bleach.

Summary: A few days after their fight, Yoruichi finally has time to explain why she didn't take Soifon with her a hundred years ago. It is a conversation she would have preferred to avoid.

A thank you to [livejournal.com profile] stunt_muppet for the pointer to this comm, though I really haven't too much to offer.

As my contribution I thought I would picspam a character from a little known show that I love.

Introduced in the third series and played by Rebecca Front, Nicola Murray is the UK's Secretary of State for the Department of Social Affairs and Citizenship and the main character in that series (and hopefully future series should they get the greenlight and within the show that Government stays in power) of British sitcom The Thick of It, which if you haven't heard of it, can be described as a modern version of Yes, Minister and is known for the show from which the movie In the Loop was spun from.

Nicola's brought into DoSAC despite being inexperienced because she's the only one who will take the job. Idealistic and somewhat naïve, she enters trying to make a difference – particularly on the matter of social mobility – and, well, doesn't. While most Ministers on the show achieve little, she has managed to distinguish herself in that she is not quite as self-serving and also one of few characters on the show who can successfully put the boot into resident hero/villain/object-of-the-fandom's-devotion Malcolm Tucker and some of her best moments are when she's doing exactly that.

I love the character and think she should be celebrated because not only is she a great case study for greater media scrutiny women in modern politics face (Nicola's make-up, clothing and skills as a mother all come up), but the writers do not seem to be afraid to allow her to be just as funny and flawed as the male characters on the show – something that's not all that common in comedies. Finally, her casting is also the only instance that I can think of when established show in need of a new lead, replaced the central male character with a female character.

I should warn you, I quote Nicola a bit and she more than holds her own with the swearing on the show (it is quite possibly the most foul-mouthed show on television).

"Fire up the turbo chargers and set phasers to equality: It's Murray time."

While Death Note and its characters are often sexist, I adore the series most important female character: Misa Amane. She's cute, obsessive, tragic, and manages to come across as crazy even in a manga where all the lead characters are at least borderline psychopathic. So here's seven fanfiction recommendations primarily centred on Misa, with some Sayu and Rem thrown in for good measure.

Where would Doctor Who be without the ladies? Not even half as awesome as it is, if you ask me. For a start, it's just not Doctor Who without the female companions. The Doctor without a companion is like having nooks without crannies. You just can't have one by itself. And a lot of the story is seen through the eyes of the companion. The human. The character the audience should be able to relate to. And the companions have come from different walks of life to try and help that along. You've got Rose, the kid who lives with her mother in a flat and with no real direction in her life yet. Martha, studying hard to be a doctor. Donna, seems to still be living at home and is going from workplace to workplace as a temp.

The female characters on this show literally do come in all shapes, sizes, races, species and roles. They are the companions with the Doctor, the mothers fretting about where in space and time their daughters have vanished to, the names which have gone down in history, the alien race which may or may not come in peace and so much more.

This picspam only uses images from the regular episodes of the new series (Ninth Doctor upwards) - no specials (although there are two shots of Catherine Tate in a wedding dress because I couldn't resist). I only really know the newer series at the moment. No shots are used of specials because, well, this thing turned out huge enough. Sorry about that. Caps aren't strictly in order either, but that doesn't take away the awesome.

Warning: HUGELY image heavy (35 lots of 960x675), spoilers for (new) series 1-4.
