Mad Men picspam, pt. I: Joan Holloway

Mad Men is a show about a particularly noxiously sexist period in American history--the late 1950s and early 1960s--that features some of the best women characters on TV. This picspam is devoted to Joan Holloway, office manager and undisputed queen bee at the advertising agency Sterling Cooper. Conventional to a fault, her mixture of steely-eyed competence and va-va-voom is nonetheless remarkable. Cross Joan at your peril; as far as I can tell, the only way to get out of that predicament is an unwise marriage to a partner.

I adore Joan, and have this mental image of her as a steely matriarch in the 1980s a la Jane Wyman from Falcon Crest, running her own advertising agency that breaks all kinds of ground in television spots....

She's one of my all time favourite characters, thank you for doing this. I love that how though she is astonishingly competent and rather unsentimental, she is nonetheless very kind. And how part of her kindness includes the insight that (for the most part) people don't always want to feel someone is Being Kind to them - it can smack of pity. So that she has this kind of loving briskness going on. I adore her!
