For Vividcon in 2007, I VJed a show called Relationships Between Women... and last year at Vividcon I joked that if only I'd waited until 2009, I could have more than doubled the available pool of fantastic vids to choose from for this theme. So, I thought it would be fun to post the playlist from the actual show with my comments about why I chose what I did then, followed by a playlist for a virtual encore vidshow, or Relationships Between Women 2009 (if I had to do it again now). In both cases, the vids all focus on relationships between women. I tried to include as wide an emotional range and variety of relationships as possible, and the women in these vids are friends, lovers, rivals, sisters, enemies, partners, alter egos, or all of the above.

I've been wanting to look back at the shows with strong women characters which influenced me growing up (and which still do), so here they are. Photos are taken from wherever. I'm really sorry about not giving credit, I've just never done this before and some of these have been wandering around my hard drive for years. There are minor spoilers for Star Trek TNG and DS9, Earth: Final Conflict, Babylon 5, Firefly, Stargate: SG-1, West Wing, The X-Files, Criminal Minds, and The Wire.

To put this in perspective, I turn twenty-four this year (2009). I started watching Star Trek from about age seven or eight, then Earth: Final Conflict and X-Files around ten or eleven, Babylon 5 in early teens, and the rest spread out until all of Stargate in one long marathon this past summer and Criminal Minds and The Wire now. These ladies have really made an impact on who I turned into because I had few other strong female role models around me as a kid and teen. Certainly none in the trades, the active military, or aviation.

Cut for photos and commentary. )

Fandom: Babylon 5, Susan Ivanova/Talia Winters
Rating: Adult for sexuality
Notes: I'm somewhat prompted to post by [livejournal.com profile] liviapenn's great B5 icons, but it was written about a decade ago, after the 2nd year of B5. Many thanks to beta-reader Elaine Lazarov.
For those familiar with B5: this fills a very obvious gap in "Divided Loyalties" in one very obvious way. It's probably no better than it should be.
For readers who don't know Babylon 5: Talia Winters is a professional telepath on the B5 space station and Susan Ivanova is the station's second-in-command. Ivanova's fear and distrust of the Psi Corps, the human telepaths' controlling guild, is extreme and mostly justified after Psi Corp drove her mother to suicide. Talia has recently started working against Psi Corps, and she and Susan are developing a friendship. But these are dangerous times...
Formula disclaimer: The characters and background in this were created by J. Michael Straczynski. Whoever owns Babylon 5 now, it isn't me.

When I volunteered to create a layout for [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon, at first I was boggled by the idea of only picking a *few* characters to represent all of the awesome female characters we love in fandom. How impossible is that!? Whoever I picked, I knew I would be leaving out huge swaths of fandom! Anyway, what I eventually decided was to organize the layout, very roughly, in terms of the theme Mind, Body and Spirit.

4 basic photomanips behind the cut  )

And here are four icons, which are multi-shareable.

(For most of my icon sets, including the icons I'll be posting on this comm for the next two weeks, I go on a "first come, first served" basis, with icons being claimable by one person only, but I would love for these icons to be used by as many people as possible, in order to promote halfamoon! So if you like them, please take them. Please also feel free to make your own icons from the base manips, if you'd like.)
