Title: Lowering the Barriers (Gradually)
Fandom: Star Trek: Strange New Words
Female Character: La'an Noonien Singh
Rating: G
Word Count: 220
Summary: Her encounter with James T. Kirk has had quite an effect on her
A/N: Spoilers for the season 2 episode "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow"
La'an knew what she was doing, becoming a security officer. Keeping people at arms length was part of the job. That way she wouldn't be able to compromise anyone else's secrets and no one else would know how to get to her. It was a lonely life.
The truth was that she didn't want to lose anyone else. She didn't want to let anyone get close enough to feel that loss. And then James T. Kirk entered her life and the barriers came down for a moment. She was free to feel something for him and the moment she did, he was taken away. (A part of her knew that it was never going to last, but she didn't expect it to end the way it did, and she didn't expect it to hurt so much.)
After that, she tried to put the barriers back up, but something was wrong. She didn't want to wall herself off from the others anymore, but she wasn't sure how she could let them know she was open to letting them in. She'd start with Una, sharing pieces of herself the other woman hadn't known. If that went well, she might consider extending her circle.
And maybe, when the James Tiberius Kirk from this dimension encountered her for the first time, she'd be ready.
