Got a little bit behind, but definitely wanted to share one last little fic here!
Title: Soft shade of silver
Author: alchemicink
Fandom: Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
Character: Izumi Curtis
Notes: 374 words; post-canon; character study
Fic is below the cut, but you can also read it on ao3 here
Izumi never really expected to live long enough to see gray hairs on her head. Not after the damage her arrogance (and Truth) had done to her insides. Not after learning the truth about Amestris and being labeled as an important "sacrifice."
She never gave up on fighting to live, but she'd always expected that time to run short. Like an hourglass with a puncture in its side, hastening the approaching end.
But here she is now, well past all that turmoil of the past, settled into a comfortable, yet unexpected present. And, in the mirror now, she can see more than a few wisps of gray mixed in with the darker parts of her hair.
She reaches up and runs her fingers over the coarse strands, as if they might just be a trick of the light. But, no, they're just as real as everything else in here. Her hair has been gradually shifting colors for a while, but this is the first time she's noticed it so prominently.
Izumi remembers plenty of neighbors around here in Dublith lamenting about gray hairs and wrinkles and achy joints as they got older. She's never had the luxury of such petty complaints. But now that the grays are here... she's not sure what those people were all upset about.
This feels like a triumph.
She's made it this far, despite all the tragedy and hardship that life has brought her.
"Izumi, the boys are here," Sig calls out from the front of the house.
Boys, she thinks fondly, even though the Elric brothers have grown up past that label.
She makes her way towards the door, catching a glimpse of the boys through the window as they chat with Sig. Their spouses are with them, and Ed has his toddler hanging from his arm.
Izumi wonders if they'll notice the gray too. If they'll ignore it or tease her or maybe hug her just a bit tighter this visit.
Well, she'll never find out the answer if she keeps lurking here inside. There's no need to waste any time.
She steps outside to say hello, head held high so that the sunlight can catch the strands, turning the gray to a soft shade of silver.
