Title: Red Alert
Author: alchemicink (that's me!)
Fandom: Star Trek Voyager
Character: B'Elanna Torres
Notes: 376 words; character study; no content warnings though there is one brief mention of blood

Fic is below the cut but can also be read on AO3 here

The blaring red alert siren seems redundant, B'Elanna thinks, as she scrambles to input the right codes into the computer. She already knows they're in deep shit right now. She doesn't need the constant distracting reminder.

A trickle of blood drips down the side of her face but avoids her eye, so she can safely ignore it. It's probably a cut from when she was knocked off her feet a moment ago, caught off guard when the ship was hit with the first barrage of weapon's fire. It hurts just a bit, but she's more focused on keeping the warp core stable under these less-than-ideal circumstances.

"Vorik," she shouts towards the work station behind her. "Get the phase compensators realigned. Reroute power from secondary systems if you have to."

B'Elanna doesn't wait to hear if he responds – she won't hear it over the red alert anyway. Instead she finishes inputting the necessary codes and then rushes towards the warp core itself. She crouches low, near the plasma manifolds, prying one cover open so she can dig around the circuitry to fix the blown-out EPS relays. B'Elanna feels like she's roasting this close to the engine and the heat makes her eyes water, but she can't spare the seconds it would take to shed her outer jacket.

The ship lurches again, but B'Elanna braces better this time.

She's got to stay focused, got to make sure the engines keep running. This is her domain, and she'll be damned if she lets it fall apart now.

She knows the rest of her team is fighting just as hard as she is. At this point, she doesn't even need to give them orders. She trusts them to know what they're doing.

Most people probably would be terrified – ship under attack, engines failing, being covered in grime – but B'Elanna lives for moments like these. The rush of adrenaline pumping through her veins, keeping her alert and in control. She knows the warp core better than she knows herself some days, knows all the tricks to keep it going when everything else might be falling apart.

B'Elanna keeps working to the soundtrack of the red alert warning, despite the blood and the sweat and the tears, because she can fix this.
