The first thing Needy did, of course, was to take revenge.
Low Shoulder wasn’t difficult to find. They did sacrifice her best friend for their success and so Needy knew exactly where they were—enjoying their spoils.
That didn’t last long.
The second thing Needy did was to find a library.
Best friends don’t keep secrets, Jennifer said when she told her about what they did to her. If those boys could find a ritual online to give them everything they ever wanted, Needy could find a ritual to bring her best friend back.
She was smarter than them, after all.
It wasn’t difficult. One could find many different things on the internet if they were willing to spend some time clicking through websites until they hit something legit.
All Needy had was time. She learned to be patient while locked away for killing the one person she now wanted to bring back. Because that was the thing…
Needy always knew she loved Jennifer, was maybe a little—a lot—in love with Jennifer. That was something she accepted as a part of herself. But it wasn’t until she was without Jennifer that she realized how deep that love went.
It went deep.
To the depths of hell and back, apparently.
And now? Well… Needy was willing to do whatever it took to get that love back.
Needy was no stranger to blood, sweat, and tears. She had shed all of those since Jennifer got possessed and after she died. It wasn’t like a little more was going to hurt.
And if it did? Needy did get some demon powers to make that all go away pretty quickly.
The ritual was simple. It involved Jennifer’s grave and the full moon and some blood-letting. Sprinkle in some Latin words as she dug into the earth and split open her friend’s coffin, making sure some of her blood spilled over Jennifer’s lips as she whispered? That was it. Nothing more.
It still took a full minute before Jennifer gasped and opened her eyes.
Needy froze. They stared at each other, Jennifer still half inside the coffin while Needy straddled part of it.
And then Jennifer smiled. “Took you long enough, slow poke.”
Needy didn’t realize she was laughing until Jennifer joined her, their giggles breaking the silence in the graveyard. She leaned forward and pulled Jennifer into a hug, ignoring the smell of death and rot that seemed to cling to her.
“Sorry,” Needy said against Jennifer’s shoulder.
“You’re forgiven,” Jennifer told her, her nails digging into Needy’s back. “But only if you find me someone to eat.”
Needy pulled back to stare at her. Jennifer raised an eyebrow at her as if daring her to say something about it.
Needy wasn’t going to. She knew what she was doing, what she was willing to accept and what she was willing to risk, when she brought Jennifer back. Making boys meals was a price Needy was more than willing to pay.
They developed a system.
Jennifer was legally dead while Needy was illegally free, so their resources were few. It made sense for them to rob whoever ended up as food under Jennifer’s sharp teeth and make their way through and out of the state as they did so.
A life on the road, just the two of them.
Jennifer learned not to waste a meal and leave evidence behind while Needy learned how to clone credit cards and hot-wire cars. They both cut their hairs to their shoulders, though Jennifer’s grew back to its regular size only a few hours later.
“Neat,” Jennifer said as she tugged on her hair. “Maybe I could try bangs?”
Needy bit back a smile and grabbed the scissors.
They made their homes in cheap motels until they found an abandoned cabin in the middle of nowhere to settle down, at least for a while. It wasn’t much, but it was theirs, alone.
“I knew you would do it,” Jennifer said their first night there, turning on her side on the bed so she could stare at Needy. “I knew you’d bring me back.”
“No, you didn’t,” Needy protests, tone weak. She knew Jennifer knew. They knew each other down to their souls.
“I did, Needy,” Jennifer insisted. “Couldn’t you feel it? Me calling you?”
Needy took a deep breath and let it out slowly. That was the thing: there wasn’t a reason for her to pretend she couldn’t feel the little bit of herself Jennifer let inside of her when she bit Needy.
The other way around was true, too.
“So what if I did?” Needy asked her and didn’t push Jennifer away when Jennifer slid closer to her. “You’re happy about it.”
Jennifer smiled at her. “You should let me thank you.”
Needy blinked at her, trying to ignore the way blood rushed to her face. “What…”
Jennifer didn’t let her continue. She closed the distance between them and kissed her, plush lips pressing against Needy’s own.
Needy didn’t hesitate to kiss her back this time. She’d missed this, the feel and taste of Jennifer’s tongue slipping into her mouth as they kissed and kissed and kissed.
Still, Needy put a hand on Jennifer’s shoulder and pushed her back an inch. “I don’t need this kind of thank you.”
Jennifer rolled her eyes at her. “What if I’m doing this because I want to? You’re my best friend. I love you.”
“I love you too,” Needy had to say back, because she did. More than it was healthy, really. “Are you sure?”
“Stop being stupid,” Jennifer answered. “When did I ever do something I didn’t want to?”
Needy stared at her for a second or two and then let herself have this, too. “Okay.”
Jennifer’s grin was a flash in the dark before she bent down to kiss Needy again. It wasn’t until her teeth were fitting over the bite mark on Needy’s shoulder that things took a turn, heat running through Needy from that point and down her toes.
That night, it was Jennifer who brought Needy back to herself—with her hands and tongue and sharp moans until Needy reached an edge she didn’t know and tipped over it. Needy finally felt like herself with Jennifer curled up beside her, both of them breathing hard and still shaking a little.
“I didn’t know you could eat someone like that,” Needy found herself saying, only to have Jennifer laugh at her.
“Only you ,” Jennifer promised. “Do you want me to teach you?”
Needy swallowed and glanced at her, taking in her pink mouth and pink cheeks and the glint in her eyes. “Yes,” she said. “Now?”
Jennifer laughed again. “So needy, Needy.”
“Shut up,” Needy grumbled, but kissed Jennifer once before making her way down Jennifer’s body.
