Ever since Lena Duchannes could remember, she was told that her destiny was not her own. It was up to her sixteenth birthday–and nothing she could do would change that. She tried to imagine what it would be like, to be claimed by Light or Dark. Would her personality change?
When she got in trouble for throwing a crayon at the back of Tommy Thompson’s head in first grade, she wondered if that meant she was destined for Dark. When her teacher let her pass out the papers two weeks after, she was certain that she was meant for Light.
As she grew older, realized what the Claiming would mean, she sank deeper and deeper into herself. If Ridley could change so much from the cousin she loved like a sister to…whatever she was now, well, couldn’t Lena change that way, too?
Every day, she passed by mirrors and looked into them, wondering if she could see the change. Could others? Towards her Claiming, Ridley had started being different. What if Lena was, too, and she just didn’t even know it?
When the dreams start, the one where the boy saves her, she wonders if it’s a metaphor. Goes through all the “dream meaning” books she can find searching for clues. Is this someone intervening and pushing her towards Light? A sign that she needed to be saved from Dark?
The move to Gatlin gets closer and closer. Maybe everyone will be safer when she’s in the middle of nowhere. When she inevitably loses control of herself, when her personality changes entirely–why would she want to make friends there? It should be easy to keep to herself, or the portion of “herself” that is still around these days.
She looks into the mirror, every day expecting to see signs of the change to come. A flicker of yellow in her green eyes, a sign that the Dark destiny she knows is coming is there for her already.
Months later, after her Claiming date, after Ethan, after everything, she will look into that same mirror, peek into her eyes. Yellow and green, Dark and Light. Not all one thing, but shades of grey.
She never would have thought it was possible.
