Title: Baby, I Love Your Way
Fandom: Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
Character: Martha Kaply (Ruby Roundhouse)
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 328
Summary: Martha works to provide a diversion
A/N: It took me a bit to find something that worked for this theme, but then I remembered this specific scene from "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" and it really shows the influence music (or at least this particular song) has on the character
Martha has never been seen as sexy in her life. But the gang is counting on her to distract those two oafs and this avatar she's been given seems to be just the thing to attract attention. She'd rather be home wearing a big sweater and reading a book. She does not want to be out in a mosquito-ridden jungle clad in a skirt that doesn't even cover her knees and a shirt that exposes her midriff. In short, there's a lot of her exposed, and not just to mosquitoes.
She tries to follow Bethany's advice and gather up her courage as she walks. When the men in the makeshift shelter say their lines, she tries to flirt. When the bigger one says the same line all over again, she loses track of everything she was trying to do. How can she flirt with an NPC? Are they even programmed to respond to that sort of thing?
She spies the tape player and it starts to play the song, “Baby, I Love Your Way.” It's an older song, one that she's heard before and it's not really Martha's thing.
But, lucky for her, in this moment, she's not really Martha. She's Ruby Roundhouse, and this song is very much something that Ruby Roundhouse can use to her advantage. “Dance Fighting”, Martha remembers on the list of strengths as her body, seemingly of its own accord, starts to sway in time to the music.
The NPCs are responding to this. They come closer- Martha's flight is at a momentary war with Ruby's fight- and luckily, Ruby wins out. Martha never thought of herself as dangerous or graceful, but in that moment, with that music in the background, she is both. She executes what feels like a ballet of dance moves and body blows to the two men until they are finally down on the ground and she can run to catch up with the others in order to escape.
