Today's prompt is the perfect excuse to talk about my favorite female film lawyer, JoAnne Galloway from A Few Good Men (played by Demi Moore). At the beginning of the film, she's the one asking for the tough cases, knowing there's more to investigate and more to be done for the Marines who stand accused.
She walks into a room full of men in uniform who outrank her, but she knows her worth and she knows she should be on the case. Her request is initially shot down when the CAPT says: "I promise you, Division will assign the right man for the job." But she proves them wrong, because the right people for the job are herself and LT Kaffee. She's a damn good lawyer, and she fights for her clients even when no one else believes in her. She doesn't have to be first chair (lead defense counsel) in the case for her job to matter. She isn't afraid to point out the flaws in her colleagues and their strategy, and that makes them all better attorneys.
This is the scene where she gets introduced:
One of my favorite moments:
Kaffee : [in a seafood restaurant] Why are you always giving me your resume?
Galloway : [pauses] Because I want you to think that I'm a good lawyer.
Kaffee : [nods] I do
It's so indicative of how women in the law have to be so much better than their male counterparts to be noticed, and how they have to be ready to prove themselves over and over. This is finally a moment where Kaffee acknowledges that he knows she's just as good as he is.
Let's not forget that she's the first one to confront Jessup on the Code Red, before that infamous courtroom scene. Jessup tries to get in good with Kaffee and do the whole "good ole boys club" thing by humiliating a female officer. In the end, though, Kaffee and Galloway are the ones who nail Jessup in Court.
There isn't much fic for her at all, and I haven't even come across any fanvids, but if anyone knows of any - please do pass them my way :)
