It's the same old story.
Boy meets girl.
Girl's heart is closed.
Boy forces girl's heart open.
Then the pain and real trouble
Begin.
It's the same old story.
I'm not supposed to hurt,
But I do.
I'm not supposed to let you in,
I know better than to love,
But I do.
It's the same old story.
I'm not supposed to let you in,
I'm supposed to stay mad,
I have every right,
But I fail myself again.
You win. Again.
It's the same old story.
I need help, but there's no one.
You've compared me to crack many times before,
Said how much better but harder to quit that I am.
Well, baby, so are you.
It's the same old story.
I cry 'til I have no more tears to cry.
I scream 'til I'm hoarse.
I cry, I try, I break, I break again...
And always, always,
I forgive you,
I take you back,
I give a hundred chances, a thousand,
A million.
It's the same old story.
I needed help,
As did my Mother before me
And her mother and her mother and her mother
And so forth for generations back.
Not just us either, but generations of families
I've known, loved, cared for.
There's no mistake that the '90s were
A female's right movement time,
That more and more women cried out against
Oppression of the man not just in the work place
But everywhere, especially in the home.
Looking back, I can see it now.
Buffy was strong, but almost raped.
Xena and Gabby ruled their world together,
With no men to distract or come between them.
Blanche went through lovers while
Dorothty's only made her suffer.
She Ra, Sailor Moon, even Rainbow Brite.
Girl Power everywhere.
Men meant trouble.
They broke women,
They hurt women,
And they still do.
I always swore I'd never be one.
I always swore I'd never succumb,
I'd never become just another statistic.
Yet here I am,
And it's the same old story again.
Here I am loving you
While you use everything I have,
Everything I am.
You break me, bend me,
To your will, to your desire,
And still, never, ever
Am I good enough.
Sarah told Jareth
You have no power over me.
I wish I had that strength.
I wish I knew how.
I wish I knew how to break this spell,
To free myself,
But true love's kiss isn't an answer.
It's just another curse.
You're just another curse.
But I can't break free.
Heaven help me,
I can't break free.
And I don't want
To be just another static.
I want to be free,
But when you come around,
I always crumble and die inside,
I always succumb,
I always let you win.
When you come around,
It's just the same old story again.
Until it's not.
Until there's a grave,
And more people whispering
As they did about my Father
And about my grandmother,
"I didn't know," or
"I tried," or
"She wouldn't listen," or
"Look at him now,
Already with another woman,
Already with another mark."
It's just the same old story
Until it isn't any more
Until the tears can't be shed,
The cries can't be heard,
Silence reigns for a while,
And then again,
Boy meets girl,
And it's just the same old story again.
The End
