She can create anything she wants on parchment. She is one of the best storytellers in all of Greece, in all the world even or at least, as Gabrielle always likes to remind herself, the known world. She can make beautiful scenes with just a few words, create whole worlds with just inked characters on scrolls. She can conquer villages, end and begin entire lands with love, solve any crisis... all on parchment.

She's quite adept at using her tongue, as well. She's gotten them out of many scraps with just her wits, sometimes when Xena couldn't use her sword for whatever reason or didn't want to and sometimes when she was still alone. She definitely has the gift of gab. She's quick witted, bright, sassy, intelligent... and yet there are still so many answers she doesn't have.

She likes to hide in her words. She likes to pretend that everything is fine and there is no beast they cannot beat. She truly believes there is no evil her Xena cannot defeat. But there is one thing they cannot best. One thing for which she still does not have an answer.

These years are growing long, and these nights are turning colder. Argo whinnies restlessly, bucking his head as though he, too, is having difficulty sleeping because of the worries plaguing him. It's almost like he can feel the depth of her thoughts. Gabrielle would almost tempted to ask him if he had any answers, but she knows he doesn't. If Xena doesn't have answers, none of them do, and besides that, voicing her concerns would awaken her best friend. At least she's sleeping soundly.

But is this really all they want in this life? They've each had children. At various times, they have each considered settling down and building a life in one of these small villages through which they're so often travelling. They're both getting tired, and that exhaustion goes far more than the physical or mental, Gabrielle knows, not just for herself but for Xena as well.

Yet they cannot seem to rest. Every time they think they have a place to stay, something happens. Some great disaster or evil strikes, and the home they thought they had is no more. Xena grunts in her sleep. Gabrielle looks at her in concern, but before the bard can speak, the warrior slings an arm over her.

And snores. Gabrielle smiles. There are countless stars in the sky tonight. Gabby once thought of each star as a possibility, a possible hope, a possible dream come true, a possible land not yet explored. She used to believe in billions upon billions of possibilities. In her good moods, she still does. But for every good thing in this world, there seems to be at least three evil ones.

That shouldn't matter though, she realizes as she allows Xena to pull her close. Xena murmurs incoherent words in her sleep, but for the most part, she seems to be sleeping peacefully. Gabrielle wishes she could. She strokes her soft, black hair out of her beautiful face and watches her sleep until her own lids begin to feel heavy.

Her eyes close eventually, a soft sound somewhere between a sigh and a snore escaping her. There are so many questions, so many problems, so much evil in this and all the other lands... But there is one steadfast truth that remains true above it all, and that is that Xena loves her. They love each other, and through all the evils and misdeeds that have plagued them, they have and will stay true to one another.

Perhaps, in the end, that's all that matters. Gabrielle still doesn't like the idea of continuing to traverse these dangerous lands when they are old, gray, and wrinkly, but if Xena's with her, what does it really matter? What does any of it matter as long as they are together? Xena murmurs something else in her sleep, and Gabrielle understands in her heart as sleep finally claims her as well.

"I love you too," she says, and in those simple words, she knows the truth. They may never be able to settle down. This life may never allow them that grace. But it truly doesn't matter, as long as they're together. Rich or poor, in sickness or in health... They've never said the words, but it doesn't matter. They've shown each other time and again. They've been there for one another throughout everything. They will never willingly leave the other.

"I love you," they say again through their slumber, through their nightmares, through the memories that haunt them both together and separately.

"I love you." And that' s what will make their future worth living. That's what makes their world worth fighting for. That's what makes everything they do worth their time, effort, and sacrifice and what will see them through in the end to victory.

"I love you." Their bodies entwine, their hands hold tightly to each other's. Through all the terrors this world and those beyond have to offer, they will see each other through them all. They will carry on each day and every night through all the battles, all the pain and scars, throughout everything and anything, because their love guides their way.

"I love you," they whisper as they sleep. Argo whinnies softly. The breeze lifts, and so do their nightmares. Entwined together, their dreams change. Maybe in this life, they aren't meant to settle down. They're not meant to live in one place or raise children or even have a steady roof above their heads. But they are meant to love each other. That's all that matters, and that's what will see them through to each new sunrise and moonset.
