Title: Content to Sit Beside You
Fandom: Desert Hearts
Female Characters: Gwen/Cay Rivers
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 255
Summary: Cay's thinking about exploring a relationship with the professor. Gwen doesn't think it's a good idea
A/N: "Desert Hearts" is a classic lesbian film from 1985 based on the novel "Desert of the Heart" by Jane Rule. In the film set in the 1950s, Professor Vivian Bell arrives in Reno from New York, looking to get a divorce. While she establishes her 6-week residency, she meets Cay, an artist who turns her life and heart upside down.
In the movie, Gwen is a minor character who is only in two scenes- one, when she greets Vivian from Cay's bed, and an another humorous moment, when Cay, Gwen, and Vivian ride into town together. The contrast between Gwen and Vivian is very marked in this scene and Cay's eagerness to move on seems evident.
What I've invented here is a "could have been" scene set sometime after the fateful car ride.
Gwen sat on a stool next to Cay as she worked on her newest creation.
“I don't know why you're keeping after it,” she said. “That woman isn't one to get her hands dirty.”
“Maybe she just doesn't know how much fun it is,” Cay mused, shaping the clay with her fingers.
“You can't mold people's nature as easily as you can mold that sculpture.”
“Oh, I don't want to change her. I like her just the way she is.”
“A stuffy old stick-in-the-mud.”
“Vivian Bell is a woman of depth. There are layers there.”
“Well, when you find the fun layer, be sure to let me know.”
“I found your fun layer.”
“I am nothing but fun layers, a woman with a surprising depth of fun. Which is really all you need.”
Cay gave Gwen a polite smile and went back to work on the sculpture. It was the echo of a similar expression she'd seen on the professor's face when the three of them rode together into town the previous week. That expression let Gwen know that Cay was looking for something more than someone to have a good time with.
Gwen seriously doubted that the something more would be Vivian Bell. The professor would be on a train back to her posh life in New York in a few weeks, and Gwen would be here, providing love and laughter, and enough good times to make Cay forget the hurt. It's what she did.
