Feb. 7th, 2021 12:38 pmTitle: Genuine
Fandom: Broadcast News
Character: Jane Craig
Prompt: Day 7 - The Fool
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 297
Summary: Jane comes to terms with Tom's deception
A/N: Broadcast News is one of my favorite movies and at one point in my youth, I wanted to be Jane Craig. She is one of the great female characters in film and Holly Hunter's portrayal of her is just perfect. It's a bit of an older film, but worth a watch.
Jane watched the tape over and over again. How was it that she hadn't seen it when it had first aired? She had been so moved by the piece, by the woman's words, and even by Tom's reaction. She'd been moved and proud, proud that she'd been able to take this sportscaster that could barely string a coherent sentence together and mold him into a reporter capable of putting together a story on his own. Oh, she knew the story was a bit on the exploitative side and barely fit the definition of what she considered 'news', but she never felt that anything in it was fake.
Until now. Watching the b-roll of the interview, seeing Tom bring up tears during the cutaway, hit her like a punch in the gut. Aaron had asked the question she should have asked weeks ago. She'd been too blinded by her attraction to Tom and had let her instincts be stifled by her libido.
Never again, she thought. Never again would she allow personal feelings to override her professional integrity. Going away with Tom would be giving him permission to erode her standards. Sure, she might be giving away a chance to have some kind of romantic relationship, but she couldn't allow his deception to stand. She had to end it.
She went to the airport, said her piece, and watched what could have been walk away from her. Her heart felt shattered, but she knew it was for the best.
She got into the cab, at first distracted by all that had taken place. As she blinked away her (genuine) tears, she realized that she hadn't given the driver complete information. Stating the best route to take, she felt herself begin to regain the control that she'd momentarily lost.
