Day/Prompt: Day 9/Astral
Fandom: Critical Role C1
Character/Pairing: Pike
Rating/Warning(s): G
Word Count: 458
Summary: A bit of Pike & Sarenrae/The Everlight
"It's harder than I thought it'd be."
She stares at the floor, a shaft of sunlight forming a ring around the front altar. The new temple is far from complete, but it's coming together. A little sigh escapes her lips, a shrug at the thought that follows her words invading the back of her mind.
So many things are.
Something's didn't have to be said, but if the will of the goddess meant staying behind while her friend ran around after a bunch of corrupt, evil dragons, she'd have to get used to it. She just missed them was all and showing up, barely visible, barely tangible it wasn't the same at standing on Grog's shoulders, or somewhere between Vex & Percy near the back of a fight, or hearing Vax laughter in her ears as Scanlan made an off-color joke.
Her friends sounded distant, almost hollow, in her astral form. Grateful as she was for any chance to be with them for a little while, it wasn't the same.
"I just…" Pike kneels at the altar, pale hair wreathed in sunlight. "I know I want too much. To be in two places. But know they need me. They say they need me."
You want to be needed.
"Can't it be both?"
She shakes her head, response or no from her Goddess. It is both. She wants to do the work she's promised to do here. An astral version of her gets to travel great lengths to be with her friends when they need her. It's better than her inability to physically be there at all and she knows it. It just doesn't stop the wanting. It doesn't stop the longing.
"I miss them," she says and it's a quite, whispered admission that makes her chest hurt. "So much."
Our work here is nearly finished.
Pike pulls a small crystal from a pouch at her side, something she's brought here for days like this. When the distance between her and her friends is too much, and the chasm between her power and her goddess is greater still. It's reason to work on the temple, to strengthen Sarenrae, but it makes long weeks without her family even more unbearable.
"Just a few minutes today, just to see them."
She looks down at the clear ball of glass in her hands, heavy weight betraying the core of it's magic and ability. Her eyes unfocus, staring into its depths as she mutters the divine words she's learned by heart, words that bring her friends a little closer, just for a little while.
It's good they're so easy to find, Sarenrae muses and Pike thinks her goddess sounds just a little amused at their antics. They're growing on her too, Pike hopes.
