I am a member of an online community where we count the books we read, and review them for each other. I've been doing it for a lot of years, and sometimes when a review sounds good and there is a categorial "I recommend this" in the group several of us will end up reading the same books. I'd like to rec two things that I read because of participation in that group. They don't have a fandom yet on AO3, and I thought if I rec them now maybe something will exist by this time next year.

Comic/Graphic Novel
I Kill Giants
by Joe Kelly. A single volume comic that tells its story deftly in that amount of space. Now a film. All of the characters are strong women and girls (with a focus on kids). It should be noted there is some bullying. Other than that I don't want to give a lot of CWs because they would be spoilery, but if you guessed from the theme of giants that this would be mythology-heavy you are correct.

The movie, which is a fairly faithful adaptation, is on Hulu.

Book
First of all the audiobook of this is amazing. It's a debut novel and I usually look at those a bit askance. Are they worth the hype? I felt that this one was. The Mermaid's Daughter by Ann Claycomb.... again, no actual fandom, but uses a lot of tropes deftly so it can be really immersive and could be open to fandom interpretation. It's a fairytale retelling with elements from Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid as well as a few elements from the Disney retelling. I know that sounds like it could become so schmaltzy and stuff but it's really woven together very well. Additionally it's worth getting your hands on the audiobook because they used 4 narrators for 4 main characters and it's just really well done.

I have more recs coming but here are the two from my book group. :)

Pretty much everything where kids are main characters is something I want to read/watch, so I guess I'm already sold on I Kill Giants. :D Probably the movie rather than the comic because movies are generally easier to find. Thanks for the rec! ❤
