Feb. 9th, 2008 03:21 pmThe Wallflower is a manga and anime.
Sunako Nakahara is a morbid, creepy girl who can't stand the sight of beautiful things or people. Unfortunately, her stylish aunt wants nothing more than for Sunako to become a lady. In order to achieve that goal, Suanko's aunt promises her four super-hot, super-popular tenants free rent if they can turn Sunako into a lady. No problem, the boys say--and then they meet Sunako, and their dreams of free rent start to crumble.
Sunako is one ugly duckling who doesn't *want* to become a swan.
Sunako is a great character, because she knows who she is, and refuses to be bullied into becoming someone else. She's also capable of physically standing up for herself, and is as likely to be found rescuing our hero as the other way around.
The series has some very real problems. The stories can be repetitive; the non-pretty people are very, very ugly in looks and personality; and there are a few chapters that will never stop making me cringe (see: sex = love = Sunako becoming a lady!)
Still, when the series is at it's best, it's a terrific, fun read.

I haven't read much fic in this fandom. Sunako is hard to keep in character, and most of the fics I've seen at ff.net try to pretty her up so that she can be paired more easily with Kyohei.
These are all my fics; most of them were written for
A Dish Best Served
- There are ingredients she does not use. They are hidden in the bottom of her drawer, locked away in small, stoppered bottles. She could make a fine meal with such ingredients, Sunako thinks.
Hope: Lost & Found
- If Sunako had an ax, she thinks, she would chop his head off! If she had a chainsaw, she would remove his hands! If, oh, if! But she is only a defenseless Creature of the Dark, small and dreary and ugly--and he glows so brightly! Sunako curses at him.
unholy, dirty, (and)
- Sunako was strong, and frightening, and impossible to manage once she had set herself upon a course of action. Sending her gibbering back to her room on the strength of his smile wasn’t cruelty--it was self-defense. She’d have slit his throat long ago if he hadn’t bared his skin to her, and whispered promises into her ear.
the white of a white feather
- It had taken them a long time--“ungrateful brat,” Kyohei muttered--and a lot more blood, tears and sweat than any of them cared to recall--but Sunako had transformed into a lady. A real lady--
tip of an autumn hair
- She kicked at a pile of leaves. They rose in the breeze momentarily, only to drift back towards the ground. Falling was inevitable. Sunako approved.
a fatal prejudice
- He had let his guard down with her, utterly certain of his own disinterest, and of hers. Other people had noticed--it had sometimes felt as if *everyone* was crazy, finding happily-ever-after in the awkward now--but Kyohei hadn’t suffered a moment of doubt: Sunako, it’s just Sunako.
a deviant heart
- Sunako has not yet melted away, nor has she turned to dust. The damage the creatures of the light have inflicted upon her is far more insidious; a slow poison. They have done irreparable harm to Sunako’s heart: it has grown weak, and soft in their bright glare.
alterity
- If she is ugly, neither Josephine nor Hiroshi-kun care.
let loose your demons
- It is a night for magic, Sunako thinks: magic wild and dark--and so fearsome that even the most bothersome creatures of the light have been forced to retreat.
