Tell us about your favorite female friendships! How did they become friends? What do they do to show their love for each other? How far are they willing to go to support their friend? What is it that makes them special?
Granted, yes, I ship them, and subtext came close enough to text for a later author to declare on panel that one of them was very very very heterosexual.
BUT!
The friendship is undeniable.
They meet because Barbara, as Oracle, recruits Dinah, as Black Canary, to her little under-the-table heroing adventure. Oracle finds the missions and the funds, Black Canary goes and does the butt-kicking. They don't meet face-to-face for over 20 regular issues and all the minis and one shots that preceded the series.
And they meet by Dinah saving Babs... and then going off to pretend to be Oracle, so Babs stays safe. From there, it's talks about men and legacies and ice cream and Thai food... and they had remarkable chemistry, even if you read it just as friends. They have both placed themselves in grave danger for each other, sat with each other through healing from crap, and taught one another various life lessons.
What makes them so damned special? It's pretty rare, outside the Titans, to get two women on one team, and let them interact about things other than heroics or some man they both slept with. Yet they do it. During Dixon's run on the book, we had LOTS of panels of them just chilling with each other. They even vacationed together at least once!
Oh, lately I've been slowly getting into DC comics. I've been making my way through some excellent Wonder Woman. And I've been wanting to start some Birds of Prey, do you folks have any recs for particular titles/storylines?
Yay, thanks for the recs, Gail Simone was already on my list with their run of Wonder Woman. *nods* Also, I don't mind recs for older stuff too, no problem. ;)
