[identity profile] bofoddity.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] halfamoon

Friends, [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon is here again! For me, that means it's time for The Unpopular Woman Love Post.

Personally I'm the kind of fan who always roots for the underdog, and there are many female characters who fill that role, and even more of them fill that role in fandom. This post is for people who want to fan the hell out of their unappreciated women and do it as loud as they can. It works like this:

1. Start a thread and put the character's name and the canon they come from in the subject line.

2. Those who love the character comment on the thread with squee, thoughts, fic/art/vid recs, picspams, essays, links and everything they can think of. Make sure your character gets all the love and the attention she deserves.

3. If a character has a thread and you want to talk about her, comment to the thread in question. General comments and threads for new characters go to the main post.

4. Focus on the love. This is an all positivity, all time post. Embrace your happy!

5. Absolutely no bashing allowed. Please avoid making negative comparisons to other characters, other character types and "well this character sucks more!" kind of comments. Those characters and character types have their fans too and hey, it's a love post. Save negativity for other things.

ETA:
5b. No bashing actresses or the other versions of the character either. Keep in mind that mileages vary and what doesn't work for you may work for someone else.

Cally Henderson, Battlestar Galactica 2003

Cally is totally an every-person in this extraordinary horrible situation, and she struggles to get through the day in an understandable, totally normal way. She remembers what she's fighting for even when she doesn't wanna anymore. And really, she got in that dude's face on the prison ship and ripped his ear off for messing with her. There's spunky and then there's spunky.

Cally biting that guy's ear is one of my favorite moments ever.

She had the misfortune of being cast as the voice of the people--one of the only voices willing to say that the cylons weren't sweet, misunderstood puppies that need to be trained to stop chewing up the shoes. And because she spoke out, she was vilified.

ugh, RIGHT? It's not like it's baseless animus, for Christ's sake, a person is allowed to be pissed at an enemy army that is actively trying to kill her horribly, especially considering that the motivation was basically shits'n'giggles.

Oh, Cally...I love fanfic writers for finally showing us things from her POV in a way the show never bothered to. Also, she's cute as a button and has no problem standing up to people twice her size ♥

Aw, thanks. I wish the writers had cared about these women at least half as much as we all do :)

CALLY! So, so underappreciated. I love that she's a great engineer but she really isn't a fighter. She hates going FTL and gets scared on Kobol and generally behaves as you might expect an ordinary person would, but that she's still tremendously courageous and does a lot of really badass things, such as ear-ripping-off, goddamn.

I never understood the hate. Cally could be bitchy, and she could be snarky, and she could call people on their shit. She was a very real person. And she bit someone's ear off!

I loved Cally early on, and when she was standing in front of the workers, pregnant and pissed off? Yeah. Total adoration of that woman.

She joined to pay for dental school! She bit that dude's ear! She gets scared but she's so human and so honest! She's a messed up motherfrakker, like everyone else on that show, but she's just - she's CALLY. She deserved so much better than she got from the writers.

I can't understand how you can hate a sweet-looking young woman who bites off a fucking rapist's ear. Loved her ever since, even though I sometimes felt frustrated with her characterization.

Cally was a complex, interesting individual-wonderfully done character. While I screamed at the TV when she was about to kill her son and herself, I understood why completely-I just really, really, really didn't want them to die :((( . S**t does s**t to people; most develop their own, inner demons and pain. That, in my book, certainly doesn't mean the people are s**t.

And I also loved the fact she joined to pay for dental school-purely out of subjective reasons I can't even pinpoint, myself. :PP

I have only JUST gotten into this series and I love Cally. I've been watching my way through the Battlestar Galactica seasons on Netflix, and I'm hunting for that infamous "Bit off a guy's ear" clip. She's got one hell of a personality.
