Today is the day to bring out your fanmixes, to tell us your top five songs by female artists or make a case for the best girl band. Send your character to a karaoke bar or show them playing an instrument or singing in the shower.

Please do not feel constrained by the themes. Anything focusing on women is welcome. You can post your work directly to the comm or as a comment on this post.

Day 6: Music - Pretty Little Dead Girl (Seanan McGuire), Galavant (Madalena+)

First the song/filk rec:

Pretty Little Dead Girl was my introduction to the music of Seanan McGuire, now better known as one of the most prolific and versatile writers of fantasy and SF to debut this century - both the song and the (now-OP) original CD. Fortunately, there are more CDs, featuring a sizeable proportion of female-centric themes (see particularly Wicked Girls, although Seanan is popular enough that some of the CDs are also OP, and the Web page is not as current as it might be; you will need to poke at your favorite local filk dealer on that front nowadays, CDBaby having morphed away from the retail disc business.

A Woman Is Entitled....

The opening number seems clear enough: Madalena and Galavant were madly, hopelessly, genuinely in love. Yet the Madalena we meet at her wedding to Richard -- to say nothing of the woman she proves to be as the series progresses -- doesn't seem to have been in love with Galavant at all. Surely both these stories can't be true...

...but then again, this is a musical. And a fantasy, since there's an actual wizard in it. And that being the case, there just might be an explanation.

(Also, since this is a story set inside a musical, there is a song woven into it....)

Day 6 - Music [...means fanvids]

Below are five fanvid recs. None of these are particularly recent, but they're favorites of mine and I thought I'd share. They're from all over the board, fandom-wise, but all feature some pretty fantastic female characters and were all made by some pretty fantastic vidders.

The editing and timing in this is just so well done! The ladies (and the dinosaurs) really shine in this. And, randomly, Brandi Carlile is one of my favorite singer/songwriters.

This is a wonderful character study of Seven of Nine incorporating her arc from child to Borg to the recent series (s1 of Picard). I think she's one of the most fascinating characters in Star Trek and this vid really showcases her journey.

The editing is fantastic and the vid narrative is built so well - the build to the game, the heart-warming moments in the bridge, and the ending with the real-life ball players.

Ellen Ripley is badass. This vid has ALL the swagger and it's one of my all-time favorites. Mind the gore (in case someone hasn't seen the movies? IDK). Vid also contains a lot of quick edits, fast cutting, and light flashes from source material.

Maria DeLuca owns a bar in Roswell called The Wild Pony, where all the locals gather for a good time. She also does palm readings and is in touch with her spiritual side. She was best friends with Liz and Alex in high school, and in season one of Roswell she gets to reconnect with both of them. She finds herself drawn into alien drama, and in the process she learns more about her family's past.

The Wild Pony is always playing music, and Maria even occasionally takes up the mic. I think she would use her bar to play music from the newest country voices. This playlist captures songs that describe her but also fit the vibe of The Wild Pony. Plus, most of the artists are prominent black voices in the country music scene.
