A/N: "Desert Hearts" is a classic lesbian film from 1985 based on the novel "Desert of the Heart" by Jane Rule. In the film set in the 1950s, Professor Vivian Bell arrives in Reno from New York, looking to get a divorce. While she establishes her 6-week residency, she meets Cay, an artist who turns her life and heart upside down.
In the movie, Gwen is a minor character who is only in two scenes- one, when she greets Vivian from Cay's bed, and an another humorous moment, when Cay, Gwen, and Vivian ride into town together. The contrast between Gwen and Vivian is very marked in this scene and Cay's eagerness to move on seems evident.
What I've invented here is a "could have been" scene set sometime after the fateful car ride.
