[identity profile] bofoddity.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] halfamoon

Well. Another year, another [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon fest of awesome. Another chance to celebrate the characters who are unappreciated and unloved.

Personally I'm the kind of fan who always roots for the underdog, and there are many female characters who fill that role, and even more of them fill it role in fandom if not in their respective canons. This post is for people who want to fan the hell out of their unappreciated women and do it as loud as they can. It works like this:

1. Start a thread and put the character's name and the canon they come from in the subject line.

2. Those who love the character comment on the thread with squee, thoughts, fic/art/vid recs, picspams, essays, links and everything they can think of. Make sure your character gets all the love and the attention she deserves.

3. If a character has a thread and you want to talk about her, comment to the thread in question. General comments and threads for new characters go to the main post.

4. Focus on the love. This is an all positivity, all time post. Embrace your happy!

5. Avoid making negative comparisons to other characters or other character types. Those characters and character types have their fans too.

Links to the threads will be compiled in this post.

Being a love post for unpopular characters, this post is bashing free. If you have any negative thoughts either about the characters discussed or their rivals in fandom (meaning no "well this character sucks more!" kind of comments), please keep them to yourself. This is about celebration and love, so let's keep it that way!

And now, celebrate!

Anastasia "Dee" Dualla -- BSG (new)

Because she didn't have any special destinies or grand role to play. Because she was that quiet, ordinary, professionally competent young woman caught in an apocalyptic clusterfrak. Because her calm, hopeful trust in the Fleet kept her strong most of the time. Because she wasn't afraid to give the Commander a piece of her mind or to resort to desperate measures to bring Baltar down. Because she really believed in Earth. And because she deserved so much better than she got.

I was shocked but not surprised with the way she ended (does that make sense)? You put it so eloquently. *sobs*

DEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the thing I've always loved best about Dee is the way, even in the midst of a situation where it might be easy for her just to let things happen to her, she makes and owns her decisions. Sometimes those choices hurt other people, and sometimes they hurt her, and rarely are they flashy, but they're still her choices. Even what happened in the end was still her choice, her agency, and there was something a little redemptive about it because of that: if Dee had to die, I'm glad it was on her own terms.

Oh, DEE. I love your write-up. She definitely deserved so much more. I love Dee's strength and quiet defiance, how she never gave less than herself.

I think Dee was the most consistent character on the show. Meaning, she really didn't change much from the first time we saw her until her last episode. Sure, she lost a lot of her naiveté along the way but I think the same can be said for all of the characters.

Dee had this beautiful, quiet strength throughout the entire series and often served as an anchor for the other characters as well as the audience.

Dee was graceful and direct in almost everything she did. From the way she ended her relationship with Lee to the way she spoke to Adama in Home to the way she approached her own death.

And this is why I loved her. Completely.

How much do I love her "you let us down" speech to Adama in "Home"? A TON! Even if she'd done nothing else the entire series, I'd love her for that one moment.

Let us just bask in the awesomeness of that scene for a moment if we may...

Dualla: If I may say something?
Adama: Speak your mind.
Dualla: I don't think the problem is that you have been betrayed. I think its that you feel helpless. You were shot, you were injured, you couldn't do anything.
Adama: Don't make excuses for me.
Dualla: And when you finally had a chance to do somthing...
Adama: I'm sorry I did this.
Dualla: You let us down... you let us down. You made a promise, to all of us to find earth, to find us a home... together. It doesn't matter what the president did or even what Lee did because everyday that we remain apart is a day that you've broken your promise.
Adama: The people aboard those ships made their own decision. It was their decision not mine. Thank you Petty Officer, you may leave now.
Dualla: You asked to talk to me sir, maybe because you think I don't have anything to say... but I do. It's time to heal the wounds commander. People have been divided.
Adama: I said that's enough!
Dualla: Children have been separated from their parents!

I just love the way she says it like people have always expected her not to have anything to say but, damnit, she does and it's too important to her now not to say it. That's one of my favorite moments in the whole series.

That part kills me. Such a quiet yet epic moment.

Agree with everything already. I loved her, and was so saddened by how she died. She deserved so much better than what she got throughout the whole series.

And don't forget how she could stand up to Lee when she needed, how she had her ideals and stuck to them, even when it meant no longer being an Adama, and how she actually gave a shit about people.

::hugs Dee::
