Summary – The kids just need a nudge
Prompt – written for [livejournal.com profile] evil_little_dog’s prompt – Pinako ‘in my day’
Word Count – 224

“In my day, young ladies flitted about, getting up to all sorts of silliness to catch a young man’s eye,” Pinako said, sitting the stew.

“In your day, the world wasn’t fully firmed up yet.” Ed grinned, making Winry and Al giggle.

Pinako calmly rinsed off the wooden spoon then whacked him with it. “Sadly, in my day, boys were just as rude. As I was saying, granddaughter, back then ladies tended to be much more passive. It was the guy’s job to ask us out. I never thought that was fair or smart. If I liked a guy, I asked him out. Why wait on him, I always said.”

”Is that why they called you the panthress of Resembool, Granny?” Al asked.

“That is a title you shouldn’t even know.” Pinako wagged a finger at him. “But yes.”

“Wow, I thought it was because she’s a crazy automail mechanic.” Ed’s eyes widened.

“No wonder Mr. Dominic wouldn’t tell me why he was afraid of Granny.” Winry shuddered.

“In my day, they allowed an old lady to finish her story.” Pinako leveled a gaze at Winry. “Or maybe I have.”

“You want me to ask Ed out since he’s being ridiculously slow to ask me on a date,” Winry said.

When Ed’s face went ruby, Pinako turned back to her cooking, grinning. “Smart girl.”

Timeline/Spoilers – pre series, no spoilers
Summary – Family life has its moments
Prompt – written for [livejournal.com profile] evil_little_dog's prompt – Trisha ‘the best is yet to come.’

Word Count -148

She caught him up in her arms, pressing her cheek to his broad back. “Hohenheim, what’s wrong?”

“Edward got into my books.” Hohenheim twisted so he could face her. Trisha saw the tension in his unusual golden eyes. “He pulled them down, nearly buried himself. How long before Alphonse is walking, too? How am I supposed to handle this? It was so much easier when Ed couldn’t get around on his own.”

Laughing, Trisha kissed her lover. “Hohenheim, we’ll handle this like any parent. We’ll encourage their curiosity and their whims. It will be all right. You’ll see.”

He smiled at her, taking her in his arms. “You are an endless source of optimism, Trisha. What would I do without you?”

”We’ll find out together, love. The best is yet to come,” Trisha promised him, her eyes set forward to all the wonders the future would bring them.

Timeline/Spoilers – no spoilers, could be set any time
Summary – Olivia had a plan
Prompt – written for [livejournal.com profile] evil_little_dog's prompt – Olivia ‘better than best’
Word Count – 196

A lot of the men of her rank thought she either got to be general on her back or that her family name had shot her up the ranks. Olivia didn’t give a damn what anyone thought. Yes, she caught a few lucky breaks but her rank had been earned and those under her command knew it. They had no doubts of her abilities.

As a little girl, Olivia knew she could get by on her family’s wealth and power. She wouldn’t even have to do much, just sit back and indulge her whims. She was attractive, a fate not shared by all her sisters, which would have helped ease her around the social strata. Life could have been easy.

But she never wanted that. Olivia grew up with tales of the Armstrong family’s military glory. She made a decision to be better than best. She was going to be in the history books. From an early age every step was on the path to achieving her own glory and she wasn’t done yet. Olivia had her eyes on ruling this country and she had no doubts that with brains and perseverance, she would win out.

Dreaming of Home

Disclaimer – not mine, all rights belong to Arakawa
Rating – PG-13
Timeline/Spoilers – set during the Ishbalan war, no spoilers
Summary – war is hell
Prompt – written for [livejournal.com profile] evil_little_dog's prompt Sara Rockbell ‘dream of home’
Word count – 170

Her breath caught in her throat as the explosion rocked the makeshift hospital. Sara stretched herself over the patient on her operating table, guts open. She let the sand and desert dirt sprinkle over her back. Sara shot a glance at her husband. Between the mask and surgical cap, the only thing visible of her husband’s handsome face were his blue eyes. Urey’s eyes looked as distressed as she felt.

They had dreamed of helping here. Neither of them realized the hell they were getting into in the Ishbalan desert. Yes, they were helping and it was still the right thing to do but there was no way of removing the stain of war from her soul. Now when she dreamed, all of Sara’s dreams were of home, of the fresh clean air of Resembol, of its lush greenness, of her mother in law’s bright yellow house and most especially of her beautiful little girl. Sara banished Winry’s memory, planning to revisit it later. Now, surgery took precedence over dreams.

Family

Rating – PG-13
Timeline/Spoilers – set during the brothers’ apprenticeship, no spoilers
Summary – They tested her
Prompt – written for [livejournal.com profile] evil_little_dog's prompt, Izumi ‘whole’
Word Count- 193

Izumi caught the boys with their hands in the cookie jar so to speak. More specifically, they had taken the pie from the sill where it had been cooling and Ed had snared a salami from Sig’s shop. They used their purloined goodies to have a picnic, celebrating a break in the cool winter weather when they should have been working on their lessons.

She and Sig, well mostly her, had laid down their punishment in loud and certain terms. Poor Alphonse had been so contrite and upset with himself. Ed had been defiant and then sulky.

Later, lying in her husband’s arms, listening to him breathing as he slept, Izumi realized this was what being a mother felt like. Being tough on the kids when they were bad, sharing in their joy, hearing them laugh and cry. She thought when she took the boys on as apprentices that it would make her heart hurt worse, make her miss her own lost child more. Instead, she didn’t feel like a mentor. Izumi felt like a mother, like she was one of the most important people in the boys’ world. Izumi finally felt whole.

A Fresh Start

Timeline/Spoilers –no spoilers
Summary – He changed her life
Prompt – written for [livejournal.com profile] evil_little_dog ’s prompt, Paninya ‘to catch a thief’

Word Count – 185

Paninya had heard the old adage ‘it takes a thief to catch a thief.’ When it came to catching her, it had taken an alchemist. Heck, Ed and his brother could have been thieves too, for all she knew at the time. Well, Ed. Al was too sweet.

It was astonishing how one person could make an impact. Dominic had made one early in her life, giving her legs to stand on but he hadn’t been able to guide her into a life where she could live honestly.

Meeting Ed had made that difference. He was like her, full of automail. He didn’t care if people started. He tried to do the right thing and seemed deeply offended that she had chosen a darker path. Or maybe he was just pissed that she stole his watch and gave him a real run for his money.

Either way, Edward started something. She had a new life, a better life. Paninya didn’t even know where to begin to thank him so she did the one thing she knew Ed would approve of, she had started living honestly.
