Summary: Asta celebrates her graduation from nursing school
There were a few of the elders that didn't understand why Asta had taken up Western medicine in the first place, but everyone from the tribe was there on the day of her graduation from nursing school. It might have been the novelty of the occasion- so few of her people pursued higher education- or it may have just been another example of them supporting each other that she'd seen countless times growing up.
Jimmy was there, looking bored and seeming to pay more attention to folding and unfolding his program than to her. She wished Jaye could see this, even if she'd be too young to remember it happening. Just having her daughter with her in these significant moments would be enough. Would she have been able to do this with Jaye in her life? Asta didn't know.
What she did know was that all of the hard work and study she put in was to make herself someone that her daughter would be proud of. This diploma was just the first step.
