Summary: Lachesis didn't understand the appeal of stargazing.
Also on Ao3, or read below the cut:
Kyoka told Lachesis they were going stargazing tonight. Recently she had discovered a scenic overpass far away enough from the lights of Toyko to show countless stars. She passionately waxed poetic about stargazing, how it was something humans had done since the very beginning.
Lachesis didn’t quite understand the appeal of it.
However Kyoka had insisted that they’d do this outing. Telling her experiencing nature was one of the best parts about being human. Plus it would be a good way to get out of the apartment and switch things up. She even got a camera that used film just for the occasion.
Though wouldn’t using a smartphone work better? Their lenses had advanced so far that taking night photos was incredibly easy. Although there was a flash feature… But it raised the question if the picture would look any good.
Might as well humor her. She wasn’t getting out of this anyways.
Lachesis sat on the couch, arms crossed. Watching Kyoka pack up their bag. She put the film inside the camera with a big grin on her face. “Man it's been forever since I used one of these!” She looked over to Lachesis, sitting with a unamused expression that was impossible to miss. “It’ll be fun, Lache-chan. Trust me.”
Turning her head to the side, her twintails swayed. “I didn’t say I wouldn’t come with you.” Nose stuck up in the air, only adding to her attitude.
Kyoka only chuckled in response. “We’ll leave after dinner.”
Lachesis stared out the window as they drove without saying a word. Quietly looking at all of the scenery as it rolled by. City streets, that soon transitioned into nature. Trees, creeks, fields of grass. It was sunset at this point in the day. So it colored everything in the sky and below.
She had to admit, this did look pretty.
On the way they passed through a small farm town. Compared to the hustle and bustle of Toyko, there was a pleasant quality about this quiet little area.
Once they reached the overpass, everything was far more secluded. Surrounded by lush forests. Lachesis didn’t pay attention to how far they went, or how long the ride was. By the looks of things they were certainly a ways away from Tokyo now.
There were streetlights by the fence, which would be good for Kyoka’s newfound camera if they were indeed going to take pictures.
Now the sun was almost gone, and the way it painted the sea of trees below it stirred something inside Lachesis. It was an indescribable feeling, she couldn’t quite explain it. Is this how humans felt about nature?
Was this what Kyoka was talking about?
Kyoka could see it in Lachesis’ eyes as she looked at the view. Her mouth slightly agape, a look of wonder and awe.
She smiled and patted her shoulder. “See I told you it was worth comin’.”
Taken out of her train of thought, Lachesis blinked.
“The best has yet to come though. I can’t wait for you to see the stars.”
Lachesis was silent. Perhaps Kyoka was onto something after all. After all, a lot of her experiments turned out to always create a positive outcome.
Kyoka held up the camera. “How about a picture? I’ve got plenty of film.”
Smirking, “I’ll humor you.” She sat on the fence and the view had become her backdrop.
“Stunning.” Kyoka whispered.
Hand to her chest, “Do you mean me? Or the view?”
“I feel the answer is obvious.” Kyoka winked as the camera let out a small click. The picture began to print, and Lachesis looked at the block of gray where the photo was supposed to be.
“Did it not work?” She crossed her arms in a huff, “What was the point then?”
“When it comes to film, the picture has to develop. It’ll take a few moments.” Taking the photo into her hands, slightly waving it in the air. “It’s a good lesson in patience!”
Lachesis had a blank stare as she pouted. But she’d still listen to Kyoka’s word.
Kyoka began to laugh as she took another picture. The camera shook in her hands as she could barely contain herself.
“What was that for?!”
“You looked so darn cute with a pout like that! I needed a picture for myself.”
Lachesis rolled her eyes, although it was paired with the tiniest smile that she couldn’t hold back.
After a few minutes the photos were finished developing and it was time to look at the results. The first photo turned out amazing. Lachesis combined with the waves of forests behind her, a sunset in the sky, it was a gorgeous picture.
Meanwhile the supposed pout Kyoka had captured was blurry. No doubt from the laughter she was unable to control.
Lachesis smirked again as she looked at the second one. “So much for capturing my pout, hmm?”
Kyoka chuckled while putting the two photos in an album.
After that the two chatted for a while as the sun began to set, and the darkness of night began to envelop the sky. Stars began to pop up as the moon made itself known. Shining in the sky. Talking about all sorts of things. Future experiments to do, Kyoka’s improvements to the Valvarusher, and what to make for breakfast tomorrow.
“Ah the stars are coming out! Lache-chan look!”
Lachesis looked up to the sky. Seeing the stars twinkle as they were scattered across. Paired together with the moon, she had to admit Kyoka was right. It was beautiful.
You could see a couple stars depending where you were in the city, but barely. It was nothing like how it was out here. Far, far away from all of the lights. That same feeling Lachesis felt before stirred inside her once more—and it felt even more intense this time.
It was a stunning view and took her breath away. Just this morning Lachesis had felt like nothing would have come out of this. She was glad she couldn’t have been more wrong.
As she gazed above, her eyes sparkled just like the stars in the sky. And Kyoka could see it as clear as day while standing next to her.
She took out her phone, and took a picture of Lachesis. Grinning as she looked down at the screen.
Lachesis was surprised. “What about your camera?”
“I wanted to make sure I captured that moment without any errors.” She kissed Lachesis’ cheek. “It was too important.” Kyoka began to hold her hand, and Lachesis smiled from the gesture. “You’re becoming more of a human, Lache-chan.”
She couldn’t help but feel Kyoka was right.
