Zoe feels like she has been fighting this war forever. The bullets have ceased to be flying all around her and she's no longer hiding in foxholes with the troops, but the risks are still there. Every time they intercept a shipment, every time they raid a storehouse or steal from a hospital on a Core world, there's always a chance that this time they won't make it back.
And the idea that they won't be able to continue this thing that they're doing, this thing that the so-called civilized worlds call “illegal” makes her ensure that none of the missions that they're on become a suicide mission or result in them getting caught. Getting those shipments to the people that need it the most, that's something worth living for.
Zoe may be an outlaw in the eyes of those from the Core, but for the people on the Rim, she's a big damn hero.
