Notes: A longer fic based on the intriguing episode Hearts of Darkness, and one of my favorite episode tie-in fics of all time. Ellen-Monika-Jacqueline is equally intriguing and only appears in this one episode.

It's one of my favorites of my own work for love of these characters and their questions. Yet -- my goodness -- written in 2001! eeek; so very much writing practice under the bridge since then! -- I had not re-read it end-to-end in a very long time until today, and I had completely forgotten how it ultimately ends. Wow. These characters...!

(I need to be that daring more often these days.)
