Title: Sarah and Elizabeth
Fandom: OZ (HBO)
Character: Eugenia Hill
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 453
Summary: Eugenia's journey to bring Augustus into the world
A/N: Eugenia Hill was the mother of Augustus Hill, one of the regulars on the HBO show “OZ”. She was only shown in one episode- the season five premiere “Visitation”, which showed the type of woman she was and then, in true Oz fashion, took her away from us. The effects on his mother's death sent Augustus into a downward spiral and then resulted in his death at the end of that season. This is my little tribute to Eugenia and the faith she seemed to hold so strongly.
Eugenia had given birth to Augustus late in life, around the time she had nearly given up hope of having a child. She and her husband had tried for many years and she had wanted nothing more to bring an heir into the world for him. She worried that he was trying to beget a child with other women- he would come home at night smelling of their cheap perfume. She never brought the subject up. She did what she had to do in order to keep her marriage intact.
Instead she prayed and prayed. She went to church, she read the Bible, the same passages over and over again- Sarah and Elizabeth. Elizabeth and Sarah. Why couldn't an angel of the Lord appear unto her and gift her with a child? It could be Elizabeth, Sarah, and Eugenia. She remembered her grandmother telling her that if her faith was strong enough, there was nothing she couldn't accomplish. She also remembered her mother saying often, “Let go and let God.”
She decided to take her late mother's advice and not worry about it. She worked at the restaurant in town as a cook, she grew flowers in the window box of their apartment, she visited with friends, and took long walks around the neighborhood. She still did her wifely duties, but the intense drive to have a child was no longer there.
When the doctor announced that she was pregnant, Eugenia laughed aloud. He'd mentioned concerns because of her age, but she knew they weren't anything for her to worry about. This child was a miracle. It would arrive as healthy as Isaac or John the Baptist.
While she was in her last trimester, her husband was killed- an innocent bystander to a drug deal gone bad. She wept that he would not be around to see his child come into the world, but there were so many neighbors that looked in on her after he was gone that she knew the child would be in good hands.
She gave birth to the baby, a little boy. When they brought him to her and she laid eyes on him for the first time, he seemed so serious. The nurse asked her his name. She wasn't going to name him after his father- it seemed to be bad luck. She thought of the names “Isaac” and “John”, but they didn't seem to fit. The baby scrunched his face up, then let out a loud cry, one befitting a natural leader. She smiled at him and said “Augustus. That's his name. My little emperor.”
She whispered a prayer of thanksgiving for the gift she had been given.
Sarah, Elizabeth, and Eugenia. Three of a kind.
