Wanted to highlight two ladies with unconventional weapons you don't usually see every day: A fan and a boomerang

Firstly, an old drabble I wrote:

Secondly, a new ficlet:
Title: It always comes back in the end
Fandom: Inuyasha
Character: Sango
Rating: G
Link: here on ao3 or you can read the full fic under the cut:

They make camp for the evening, all exhausted from a day of recovering a jewel shard from another demon. Once dinner is dealt with, Sango excuses herself for some quiet time alone.

The battle had been hard-fought – harder than it should have been really – and her body aches with new bruises and scrapes. Not anything serious. She will clean them all later with a bath, and forget about them come tomorrow.

But first she must attend to Hiraikotsu.

She pulls the large boomerang into her lap, balancing it across her knees. She shook off most of the viscera earlier, but there is still a light residue of demon blood clinging to it in spots.

Sango pulls out a clean rag and gets to work.

There is something satisfying about seeing the grime get wiped away, exposing the polished bone underneath. It feels like a testament to their win today.

After cleaning is done, she inspects the weapon for any knicks or cracks. It's best to find and fix any weaknesses beforehand, instead of discovering them in the next battle.

Sango's hands slide across the smooth surface, familiar under her fingertips. She knows every inch of this boomerang as well as she knows her own body.

Luckily, it seems as though Hiraikotsu made it through intact. The mess was the worst of it.

Good. Repairs are always more difficult on the road, without access to the tools that she had in her village.

Her grip tightens unintentionally on the boomerang as her thoughts drift to home. Her village and its people are long gone. Her brother remains lost to Naraku.

But she still has her powerful demon-slaying weapon to hold the weight of all those memories.

Sango remembers when she was first given this weapon. It was much bigger than herself at the time. She struggled with its weight at first, swung it around clumsily, staggered over when trying to catch it. She remembers chasing after it many a time before she could get it to return on its own.

The Hiraikotsu requires much practice, especially when one starts using it at such a young age. And in those days, Sango was determined to master it. Swing, throw, catch. Swing, throw, catch. Over and over again until the muscles and form developed.

Now, the weapon is an extension of herself. Most people have two arms, two legs. But Sango has two arms, two legs, and a boomerang on her back. No matter how hard or how far she throws it, it always comes back to her in the end.

She runs her fingers over Hiraikotsu one last time, satisfied that it's ready for battle again after her attentive care.

Sango stands up and secures it on her back again, making sure the leather strap is positioned right across her chest, and then returns to camp.
