Title: Jeff's Worst Idea
Fandom: Yellowjackets
Characters: Shauna
Rating: PG
Summary: Of all the possible ways that Jeff could have surprised Shauna with a weekend away, her idiot of a boyfriend had to pick camping?

When Jeff had promised Shauna a weekend away and told her the destination was a surprise, she’d been envisioning a quaint guest house in New England, a cottage, even a basic room in a Holiday Inn full of bachelor parties would have been better than what he turned out to have come up with.

Camping.

Apparently he and his cousin used to love these getting back to nature trips when they were kids, so he wanted to share that experience with Shauna. He just hadn’t factored in the fact that he and his cousin hadn’t spent 19 months trapped out there in the wilderness, not knowing whether they’d ever get rescued (and that was just what Jeff knew about at that point). Why would Shauna want to relive all the memories of that?

To be fair to Jeff, once Shauna had started trying to explain, he’d realised his error and suggested they try driving around looking for anywhere else that had vacancies, but Shauna didn’t rate the chances of that at this stage, given that it was a holiday weekend and everywhere had probably been booked out long since. So she gritted her teeth as she helped assemble the tent, telling herself that it was different this time – it was a different part of the country, it was a known camping site rather than the wilderness, with people on site if anything did happen, and Jeff was there with his car. Jeff had said that if it did get too much, just to wake him up and he’d get them out of there, even if it was 3am, and Shauna knew he’d do it. But she was determined to stick out at least one night.

At least, she was until they realised Jeff had forgotten the camping stove.

But it was okay, they weren’t that far from a town where they could go and get something to eat, maybe it wouldn’t quite be the back to nature experience that Jeff had intended, but it was easier for Shauna to have that bit of civilisation before tackling camping out overnight.

As she lay there, she thought of how Van had admitted to her once that it had taken her ages to drop off to sleep once they were home without having Taissa next to her, she thought of how she herself had listened for Jackie’s snores for weeks before accepting that she was never going to hear them again. And she remembered the times she’d hear noises in the night and not been sure whether to be scared of the animals or to think that at least if she was hearing them, that meant that Natalie and Travis would have had something to hunt.

This was a proper site, they weren’t near bears, Shauna kept telling herself she didn’t need to worry about animals, about anything. But it still took her a long time to fall asleep.

I'm just barely familiar with the fandom but based on what I know, camping is the last thing any of them would want to do. I like how Shauna was willing to attempt it even though it had to be hard for her. Nicely done!
