Two ladies serving in the military in the 90s. Yeah, there are some boundaries they shouldn't cross. (But they do)
Title: Moments
Fandom: Stargate SG-1
Pairing: Sam/Janet
Rating: G
Content Notes: briefly implied reference to DADT; set during the early seasons of the show
Link: here on ao3 or you can read the full fic below the cut:
Janet likes Sam from the first moment they meet. She's intelligent, confident, kind. And unlike most of the other people Janet treats, Sam actually mostly listens when she says "don't overdo it while you're recovering" from whatever injury or sickness they've been hit with that week.
Working at Stargate Command is unlike anything she's ever done before, and it takes some time to adjust to all the weirdness that comes with the job. But she finds herself looking forward to passing Sam in the halls, exchanging quick updates and funny stories. Sharing a table during lunch breaks when their schedules line up, talking about how life led them to this point. Sitting next to each other at briefings, knowing they're both doing everything in their power to protect Earth in their own ways.
It's nice to have a friend here.
***
Janet doesn't like when Sam ends up as a patient in her infirmary, but she'll admit – only to herself – that she enjoys those quiet moments when she wipes away blood and dirt from Sam's skin, bandages her up so that she can heal.
Janet's a doctor, after all. There is a simple satisfaction in making people feel better.
"Be more careful out there," Janet says, after cleaning up a nasty scrape on her arm from sliding across some rocks off-planet earlier.
Sam smiles. "It just comes with the job."
Right. The dangerous job of exploring the galaxy with enemies always hot on their heels.
Janet always says a quiet little prayer whenever SG-1 departs, hoping they'll all make it back in one piece. But knowing that life is often more cruel than that.
***
Janet's whole world turns upside down when she takes in Cassie. She never thought much about motherhood before, had never planned on it for herself. But she knew she was the best option for the young girl.
Cassie would rather stay with Sam, but she's off-world too often to give her a stable home. So Janet is the one who adopts her, rearranges her home and life to fit a new person into it.
One moment, Janet was merely a military doctor. The next, she was juggling school lunches and homework assistance.
For a while, Janet's whole focus shifts to building a relationship with Cassie. Learning how to be a mother to her. Figuring out how to help Cassie through all the trauma she experienced. She's out of her depth here, but Sam is a willing shoulder to lean on and a helpful listening ear whenever Janet feels like she's drowning under the weight of all her new responsibilities.
"You don't have to be Mother of the Year. It's enough that you're there for Cassie when she needs someone," Sam says.
"I'm trying my best," Janet says.
Sam wraps an arm around Janet's shoulders and pulls her close.
"And I'm here for you for when you need someone."
No one else seems to understand her struggles like Sam does.
***
Sam loves Cassie just as much as Janet does. She makes time in her schedule to come visit, to play games with her, to watch movies together. Janet delights in the opportunity to invite Sam into her home, watching her kick off her shoes at the door, get comfortable on the couch. She visits often enough that she even develops a preference for which of Janet's cups and plates she likes to use when the three of them sit down for dinner.
"That's Sam's coffee mug. Don't drop it," Cassie reminds her when they do the dishes.
Janet smiles, and makes sure the soap suds don't make it slip out of her fingers. "I'm sure she'll be looking for it tomorrow when she visits."
It almost feels like co-parenting after a while.
Janet decides she doesn't mind that at all.
***
It takes some time before Janet realizes that her feelings have shifted. What was once friendship has turned into a yearning for something else. Something more. It happened so naturally that Janet didn't notice until they're sitting together at lunch one day, and Janet finds herself totally enthralled as Sam tells a story about the stars on the last planet she visited. It's as though the rest of the world has faded away, and it's only Sam now. Janet could listen to her forever. Just the two of them.
She wants that. Just a little cozy world under a starry night sky for only them, where Janet can be honest about her feelings, and maybe Sam might feel the same too.
Then the UNSCHEDULED OFFWORLD ACTIVATION alarm goes off and shatters Janet's fantasy. Sam leaves her lunch half-eaten as she races towards the gate room.
Duty always calls. Danger is always lurking.
It's an unpleasant reminder of what Janet can't have.
There are boundaries she's not allowed to cross.
***
Janet signs Cassie up for a two-week summer camp. Her daughter is thrilled about the opportunity to explore somewhere new for a bit, and Janet helps her pack.
But the house feels overwhelmingly empty afterwards. It's the first time they've spent this much time apart since Janet brought her home. The silence used to not bother her, but she's changed so much since joining the Stargate program.
She sinks into the couch to rest, and does nothing for a long time.
And then, the doorbell rings.
She finds Sam standing on her doorstep, a bag of takeout in her hands.
"Cassie's at camp," Janet points out, confused. Sam should have remembered that her regular hang-out with Cassie would be on hold until she returned.
"I figured you'd be a little lonely," Sam says, then hesitates. "...But I understand if you don't want company."
"No, no, please," Janet answers quickly, and ushers her inside. "You're always welcome here."
It's not the first time they've spent time together outside of work, but this somehow feels a bit different. Like there's a hint of anticipation hanging in the air.
Or maybe Janet's just imagining it. Because she wants there to be something more.
They eat the takeout, turn the TV on, and then mostly ignore it as they talk about whatever comes to mind. Astrophysics. Promising new drug trials. The weird noise Janet's car is making. The way the trees smelled on the planet Sam visited last week. All the restaurants in town that take forever to deliver.
It's everything and nothing, but to Janet, it's all wonderful.
Time slips away from them, and Sam stands up to leave. Janet wants to ask her to stay, but that feels like tearing down the boundary they're supposed to keep in place as friends, as coworkers, as two women in the military.
But Janet also thinks about all the people who come to her infirmary, broken and battered and bruised. And all the bodies that she never even got a chance to try to save. Working at the SGC is dangerous. There is always risk involved.
Tomorrow is never promised.
So she throws caution to the wind and tells Sam everything.
And, to her surprise, Sam responds in kind. With a confession of her own, and a kiss.
Janet cannot think of a moment when she's ever been happier.
***
Things do not change outwardly. At work, they nod and say hello while passing in the halls. They grab lunch when their schedules line up. They continue to pick chairs side by side during briefings when they can.
Janet keeps the infirmary running smoothly, and Sam explores new planets and fights off the Goa'uld.
But, outside of the base, they get to know each other in a different way, explore a new relationship. Maybe one day, they'll be able to tell others about the growing love they're nurturing together.
But until then, they are good at keeping secrets.
