Love is not love, Which alters when it alteration finds, Or bends with the remover to remove: O, no! it is an ever-fixed mark - Sonnet 116 William Shakespeare
How had it come to this? Edalyn had no clue but if she had her way, it wouldn’t have. She wouldn’t be standing there, knees nocking, dreading the next hour. It would have been quiet, maybe never officially happening at all if it had been left up to her. At least you managed to talk everyone out of this being held in Pineal Park at the Head. Having a few people here with crystal balls and other recording devices was bad enough. Having actual people they barely knew there was a step too far. Raine would have disappeared into the Human Realm and barred the door after them.
“You can’t be nervous, Eda!” Luz proclaimed, her hair slicked back and looking fine in her Abomination-purple suit. “We’ve done so many more dangerous things than this.”
Eda snorted. What did Luz know? She was a kid. She side eyed Luz. No, not really a kid anymore. She and her friends were proper young folk now. Titan, Blondie was about the age she and Raine had been when everything finally fell to pieces entirely. Camila had been lamenting Luz had gotten her driver’s license, some arcane rite of human passage. Eda could tell Camila was simultaneously proud and sad because it marked the fact her little girl wasn’t so little anymore.
Still, when Luz had stumbled onto the fact that Raine had been kicking around the idea of a bonding ceremony, she took up the mantle and ran with it. She’d roped in all her friends with stars and flowers in their eyes, none more so than King, and now here she was staring out her living room window, barely able to recognize her own yard. Willow and her plant magic friends had transformed the entire area into a flower and vegetable feast for the eyes. The colors and scents were a riotous tableau. At least Eda had gotten her wish that as many of the plants as possible would be useful for potion making when things finally went back to normal.
What are my changes of hiding out there in the foliage? Eda turned to Luz and replied, “Not nervous, kid.”
It would be more believable if her trademark high heeled boots – this time in deep green – didn’t accentuate her shaking legs. A quiet little ceremony would have been perfect but this? Wow, this is more than I was ready for!
Raine had backed up Darius when he said as ‘heroes of the Isles’ and being among the current leaders, something big and showy would help ease people’s minds that the worst was past them. Something quiet and private just wouldn’t do. Given how nervous Raine was in front of a group, it had cost them deeply to agree with Darius.
Eda didn’t even know when she lost control exactly. Probably the moment Luz got involved. Or maybe the fact King picked up on Luz’s excitement and cranked it up to the sky. Or maybe it was when Darius pointed out she had zero fashion sense – oh, yes she did – or when Lilith mentioned that since Eda was representing the leadership of the Isles, she needed to present herself with a certain modicum of grace and decorum that she didn’t normally have – oh, yes she did…okay maybe not.
In the end, she let Darius help – because how could she argue his sense of presence and fashion wasn’t among the best she’d ever seen – and she gave in to Luz and her friends’ assistance as well. She smoothed her hand down her dress - Luz’s choice - mint green to match Raine’s hair with large floral panels of lace that was so not her. Willow and Amity had fashioned a spider’s web of tiny flowers to drape over her head and Lily had found a bejeweled spider hairpin to center on it. She had put her hook hand aside and gone with an engraved gilt one Alador had fashioned for her. The fingers were cupped to hold even more flowers. Eda glanced in the mirror. Damn, girl, you look fine!
Luz gave her a little hug. “You ready?”
“As ready as I’ll ever be.”
Luz slipped her hand into Eda’s and gave her a little tug toward the door. Their friends were outside. Some had already surrounded Raine, others waited for her. Darius and Eberwolf flanked Raine. Who in the world had fluffed Eber up to twice his normal volume and tipped his mane in violet? Hunter and Alador were also there with Raine. Lilith, Mom and Dad and the rest of her and Luz’s friends surrounded Eda. Camila and Vee had come too, and Edalyn couldn’t picture this without them. Steve had Hooty’s backpack around his shoulders and Hooty was already sobbing loudly.
King waited in the center of the arbor Willow and her friends had made, all but dancing as he waited for her and Raine to approach. Skara, Katya, Derwin and a few other bards played softly as their de facto boss strolled toward King. Eda’s mouth went dry as she took Raine’s hand as they walked. Suddenly she was glad of all the scrolls and crystal balls capturing the moment because had Raine ever looked finer? Their hair had grown out some in soft green curls and their embroidered tunic echoed Eda’s gold and silver eyes.
How someone so unable to speak in a crowd became the head bard, Eda would never know. She doubted anyone other than her and possibly King heard Raine mumbling about love without limits when it was their time to speak. That was okay. She could speak loudly for the both of them.
“Rainestorm, my heart was broken. You saw it, you claimed it. You touched it, you saved it. I can no longer imagine this journey without you next to me,” she said.
Raine reached up and removed one of Eda’s golden earrings. They pocketed it so they could remove their own dangling earring and affix it to her ear. Raine put Eda’s earring into their own lobe. Their friends lost their collective minds.
The music roared and everyone swirled into dances. Apple blood flowed along with something Camila had brought from home called mamajuana that she said was a mix of rum, red wine, honey and spices and the kids should not be allowed to touch it. A few sips of the potent stuff told Eda why not. She downed a glass of the mamajuana before allowing Raine to spin her to the center of the dance circle. They planted a dippy kiss on her and, as she bent over their arm in that dip, Eda wanted to scream ‘yes I can be graceful.’
She returned the dip and kiss, bending Raine low over her arm. They smiled up at her. Damn if Luz wasn’t right. Being officially bonded to Raine was the most beautiful thing in her life. Owlbert circled around them, hooting happily before zooming off after Waffles to chase the blue jay around the dance circle. Edalyn smiled at her friends and family, wishing she could tell them how her love for them had no limits either. No, no need to tell them. They already know.
