Eda stretched and rubbed her arm where it ached at the tip of the stump. Her home was too quiet. Luz had taken King for a sleepover with all her friends for the next few days. Lily and Hooty had gone to see Mom and Dad. It was just her and Raine and damn if that didn’t make her nervous. They hadn’t been alone in so many years. She wasn’t sure what was next. There was so much pain and distance between them. She wanted to chuck that all out but did Raine? Taking it slow was probably the best way to go. That is so not my strong suit!
She found them outside, staring up at the sky. Between the light spilling out of the house and the cloudless, moon-lit night, their pale minty hair gleamed. Even in the gloom, the tear-like scars spilling down their cheeks – Belos you bastard – were visible. Neither of them had come out of the battle for the Isles undamaged.
Sitting next to them, Eda canted her gaze up to the stars too. “It’s a beautiful night.”
“It is.” Raine sighed. “Are you okay, Eda?”
She snorted. “Sure. Why wouldn’t I be?” She tried to blow the question off. Raine narrowed their eyes at her. “It throbs a bit but that arm came off with the curse anyhow.”
Raine shuddered. “I know. It’s why I pulled it off. The draining spell mixed with your curse was killing you.” The tip of their tongue flicked over their lips. “Titan! Eda, I destroyed your arm, and I don’t know how to deal with that.”
Eda took their hand, raising the knuckles to her lips. She whispered a kiss over them. “Raine, you saved my life. You kept your promise to Luz. My arm was sacrificed to save so many people because my curse would have undone us all. I know that was the plan but when it went sideways….no, this is better. I can cope. I’m not alone, not anymore.” She gave them a look, hoping to hear something to make her heart soar.
Raine leaned in close. “You are not alone. I’m sorry I ever left you alone. It was a mistake.”
She shook her head. “It was the best choice at the time. It wasn’t easy on either of us and we can’t change what we did. It’s time to leave it in the past… and there is so much more I want to say but…I am really bad the speech making.”
Raine laughed. “Don’t look at me. I leave that to Darius.”
“The man does love the sound of his own voice.” Eda caught Raine’s chin and kissed the fresh scar on their cheek. “But I don’t want to talk about him. I want …. I wish I knew. I want so much I can’t put it into words.”
“I want to fly away with you but…fiddlesticks needs to heal.” Raine cast a mournful look back at the house. Their injured palisman rested within.
Barely thinking about it, Eda transformed. She brushed her wings against Raine. “I’ll be your wings now, so fly as much as you want.”
They smiled so huge it warmed Eda deep to her core.
“Or,” she said throatily as she snuck her hand under Raine’s tunic. “We can try another type of flight.”
Even under the moonlight, their blush glowed. “I want to take that flight.”
Encompassing them in her wings, Eda pressed her mouth against Raine’s. Words were no longer necessary.
